Newcastle defeats Liverpool, win League Cup
Dan Burn and Alexander Isak scored goals as Newcastle United beat Liverpool 2-1 in the League Cup Final on Sunday at Wembley, ending their club's 70-year wait for a domestic trophy.
Federico Chiesa brought Liverpool within one during second-half stoppage time, but the Magpies held on for the win.

The Magpies lift a trophy at Wembley for the first time since the 1954-55 FA Cup, and their first major trophy overall since the 1968-69 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, a predecessor to the UEFA Cup/Europa League.
For Liverpool, the Reds fail to improve their record 10 League Cup triumphs and now have just one trophy left on offer — their presumptive Premier League title.

Federico Chiesa goal — Liverpool 1-2 Newcastle (90+4')
Chiesa is initially ruled offside as he slots past Pope in the third of eight minutes' stoppage time.

Two last subs
Emil Krafth and Sean Longstaff are in for Newcastle, replacing Jacob Murphy and XXX ahead of eight minutes stoppage time.
Newcastle subs
Alexander Isak is a bit hobbled and will leave in favor of Callum Wilson.
Barnes also exits for Joe Willock.
Newcastle 10 minutes plus stoppage away from a first major trophy since 1969.
Liverpool subs
Harvey Elliott and Federico Chiesa enter the game, replacing Luis Diaz and Ryan Gravenberch.
Liverpool sub
Cody Gakpo for Mac Allister, 67'.
Kelleher matches his counterpart
The Magpies look set to make it 3-0 but Kelleher makes a great save on Isak, who was set up by an awkward leaping cutback from Harvey Barnes.
Pope makes acrobatic save
Szoboszlai sets it back for new sub Jones just beyond the penalty box.
He smashes the ball toward goal and a leaping Pope somehow reaches back to slap the ball clear!
2-0, 60'.
Liverpool subs
Jota exits for Darwin Nunez and Konate leaves for Curtis Jones.
Arne Slot will not waste another moment in going for it. All gas.
Alexander Isak goal! — Liverpool 0-2 Newcastle (52nd minute)
Barnes and Livramento work a 1-2 on the left, and the latter crosses to the back post.
Jacob Murphy wins the ball down to Isak, who smacks it home from a central position.

Newcastle offside goal
VAR has a look after Isak scores off a corner kick.
It appears that Isak is onside but VAR says Bruno Guimaraes was interfering with the keeper's line of vision.
Halftime — Liverpool 0-1 Newcastle
A huge chance for Liverpool at the break goes begging and changes the numbers to show something unlike the half we witnessed at Wembley.
Newcastle out-attempted Liverpool 9-1, and the Reds had no shots and 0.00 xG heading into stoppage time. Now that stands at 0.47 to Newcastle's 0.71.
Blythe-born Dan Burn, called into England camp for the first time at age 32 this week, has the goal. Wow.
Dan Burn goal! — Liverpool 0-1 Newcastle (45th minute)
Trippier sweeps in a corner from the right and it clears the pack except for big Dan Burn and his mark, not-as-big Mac Allister.
Burn turns his header across goal and Kelleher can't get across to it! The black-and-white part of Wembley erupts!

Stout defending from Liverpool
Barnes sends a good cross to the right, where Isak's header is blocked and so is Trippier's bid at the rebound.
An ensuing corner leads to Kelleher collecting Burn's header.
0-0, 35'.
Reds free kick
Trippier gives away a free kick just under 40 yards out from goal.
Andy Robertson sizes up the opportunity and serves in a pass that Dan Burn heads out for a corner.
Murphy defends it well and Liverpool throw the ball in to restart possession.
0-0, 29'.
Kelleher smothers danger
Newcastle win a corner off a questionable onside rush.
The ball hits the ground at the back post and Jacob Murphy tries to force it back into traffic only for Liverpool's Kelleher to swallow up the bid.
0-0, 26'.
Sandro Tonali hammers wide
Second- and third balls won off a Fabian Schar long pass lead to a Newcastle break.
Sandro Tonali drives in from the left and lays into a shot that misses the far post.
0-0, 24'.
Midfield battle materializing early
Alexis Mac Allister is tackled hard by Joelinton, and the Argentine has been at the center of a couple early moments.
The two shots in this game are both Newcastle's but the six fouls — four by Liverpool — triple that figure in a tense game waiting to open up.
Excellent atmosphere as Magpies test Quansah
Newcastle's midfield is busy and have looked early to their right side, where Jacob Murphy will send the ball across the field toward young Liverpool back Jarell Quansah.
Both Liverpool's and Newcastle's supporters are filling the venue with sound and color, and it's a terrific experience early at Wembley.
Lineups explained
Alisson Becker is ill and cannot play, putting Caoimhín Kelleher between the sticks in Liverpool's hunt for silverware.
Ibrahima Konate passes fit but Trent Alexander-Arnold misses out for the Reds, as Jarell Quansah will start at right back.
Quansah won't have to face suspended Anthony Gordon nor star left back Lewis Hall, as Harvey Barnes begins the match at left wing and either Tino Livramento or Kieran Trippier will flip from the right to the left.
Liverpool lineup
Kelleher, Quansah, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson, Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Szoboszlai, Salah, Diaz, Jota
Newcastle United lineup
Pope, Trippier, Burn, Schar, Livramento, Tonali, Guimaraes, Joelinton, Murphy, Barnes, Isak
Liverpool vs Newcastle recent history
December 4 — Newcastle 3-3 Liverpool
February 26 — Liverpool 2-0 Newcastle
Newcastle are one of seven domestic rivals to take a point or more off Liverpool in the Premier League this season (Arsenal, Fulham, Manchester United, Everton, Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest x2).
The fun ends there, as Newcastle have not defeated Liverpool over 90 minutes since December 6, 2015, with 12 losses in that long winless run. Ironically, Liverpool got a win out of that loss, buying winning goal scorer Georginio Wijnaldum after that season.

Liverpool team news, focus
The Reds look set to be forced into a big challenge at right back, as Trent Alexander-Arnold has joined backups Conor Bradley and Joe Gomez on the injury list. Jarell Quansah would be favored to pick up the start, but the Reds are also waiting on an injury to center back Ibrahima Konate. Kostas Tsimikas could swap sides of the field but either way the Reds are in a tough place over 90 (or more) minutes at the back.
OUT: Joe Gomez (thigh - MORE), Conor Bradley (thigh) | QUESTIONABLE: Ibrahima Konate (fitness), Trent Alexander-Arnold (foot)
Newcastle team news, focus
Newcastle, like Liverpool, face issues at the back and will could deploy Kieran Trippier or Valentino Livramento on the opposite side of their preferred right back position, while Matt Targett is also an option. Dan Burn would normally be the look there, but he's required next to Fabian Schar at center back as the Magpies remain without center backs Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles. Newcastle have electric center forward Alexander Isak healthy and the Reds will still have to deal with Harvey Barnes and Jacob Murphy in the absence of the suspended Gordon.
OUT: Lewis Hall (foot - out for season), Anthony Gordon (suspension), Jamaal Lascelles (knee), Sven Botman (knee)
Liverpool vs Newcastle preview
The Reds are the holders and have won two of the last three League Cups, and would love to give Arne Slot the first piece of what would be a probable double in his first year in charge of the legendary club.
Newcastle, meanwhile, lost the 2023 final to Manchester United and have never won this trophy, having lost to Manchester City in the 1976 final — their only other appearance.
Eddie Howe would be thrilled to end Newcastle's 70-year wait for a domestic trophy (not counting Championship division honors), but the Magpies are facing some serious challenges without Sven Botman and Lewis Hall at the back and Anthony Gordon suspended after his petulant red card against Brighton in the FA Cup.
Liverpool also have a physical and emotional challenge ahead of themselves following their Champions League exit against Paris Saint-Germain, which came after 120 minutes and penalties of an engrossing and exhausting second leg Tuesday at Anfield.
Liverpool vs Newcastle prediction
We hate to over-simplify but we're going to do it in the form of one simple question: Would you bet on Mohamed Salah to go a fifth-straight game without a goal from the run of play? Salah was blanked twice against PSG and had an assist but no goal against Newcastle over the last month, scoring twice from the penalty spot against Southampton. That ends Sunday and prolongs Newcastle's trophy wait. However, if Newcastle can get this affair to extra time, look out as Liverpool would be on 240 minutes over six days. Liverpool 2-1 Newcastle.
