Likely timeline for Trey McBride's coming contract extension with Arizona Cardinals
One of the big offseason questions for the Arizona Cardinals will be whether they sign tight end Trey McBride to a contract extension. General manager Monti Ossenfort has said this offseason that they intend to do it, calling McBride "certainly a guy that we would love to extend" at the combine last month.
The question is how much it will be for and when the deal will get done.
The amount will probably surpass $20 million a year, especially with the way contracts are currently going.
But the when is what a lot of Cardinals fans are worried about.
History says we are a few months away. After all, there is no real rush because he is still under contract for the 2025 season and could easily have the franchise tag used on him next offseason.
They won't go that route.
If we look at the history of players the Cardinals have drafted and given extensions after their third season, those deals have always come in the summer.
Here is the history of the Cardinals and contract extensions for their own draft picks getting a second contract after their third NFL season since the 2011 CBA.
- CB Patrick Peterson's five-year contract extension entering his fourth NFL season came on July 29, 2014
- S Tyrann Mathieu's five-year extension entering his fourth NFL season came on Aug. 2, 2016
- RB David Johnson's three-year extension entering his fourth NFL season came on Sept. 8, 2018
- S Budda Baker's four-year extension entering his fourth NFL season came on Aug. 25, 2020
- QB Kyler Murray's five-year extension entering his fourth NFL season came on July 21, 2022
- S Jalen Thompson's three-year extension entering his fourth NFL season came on Sept. 2, 2022
- LB Zaven Collins' two-year extension entering his fourth NFL season came on Aug. 3, 2024
The earliest announcement was Murray's deal, and that came on July 21, just before training camp.
So when can we expect an announcement about a contract extension for McBride? History says it probably will happen after the start of training camp, sometime at the beginning of August.
And it makes sense for the timing of things. The Cardinals are heavy in free agency. Then they are working on the draft. Then they work to get contracts done with their draft picks. After OTAs and minicamp in June, players get time off, and so do the coaches and front office. So after June, nothing really happens at all until right before training camp.
So the lack of news about an extension is not about any hardballing or procrastinating. It is simply the normal timeline for NFL teams and contract negotiations.
So sit back and wait. The news about McBride isn't coming for a while. The only reason we will have to talk about it is if he decides not to participate in the offseason program once that begins.
