League leaders stunned in the capital
Bayern München entered this clash eager to return to winning ways in the Bundesliga, aiming to extend their lead at the top to 11 points before Leverkusen’s trip to Stuttgart. With dominance expected from the reigning champions, they immediately took control of possession, dictating the tempo from the first whistle.
Despite Bayern’s relentless pressure, enjoying a staggering 84% possession in the first half, Union Berlin refused to be broken. The hosts remained compact, disciplined, and well-organised, frustrating Bayern’s attacking stars and limiting them to half-chances. Though Vincent Kompany's side controlled the ball, they struggled to carve out clear-cut opportunities against a resolute Union defence.
As the teams headed into the break, Bayern had all the possession, but Union had something just as valuable; belief. The second half promised a tense battle as the hosts sought a breakthrough.
As the league leaders continued to push and prod, they finally took the lead in the 75th minute via Leroy Sane.
After a good run, Josip Stanisic pulled the ball back for the winger who slammed home into an empty net.
However, in sensational fashion, die Eisernen found a spark in attack in the 83rd minute as Benedict Hollerbach slammed home after an error from young goalkeeper Jonas Urbig. And as always, Stadion An der Alten Försterei was rocking.
Seeing out the match with a herculean effort, Steffen Baumgart's side picked up a fantastic point against the league leaders.
