Kirby Smart uses the same word 4 times to criticize Georgia football
Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart made it clear that there's a long way for the 2025 UGA football team to go. Georgia has just had a few practices, but Smart does not like where Georgia is at.
"We are a work in progress," said Smart. "We have the least number of players who have gone through three spring practices since I've been here."
This offseason, Georgia lost 17 players to the 2025 NFL draft and lost 15 players to the NCAA transfer portal. The Bulldogs don't return as much experience as they usually do, but that does not mean that the standard has changed at Georgia.
"We have a very young, inexperienced group," said Smart, who described his players as "tired" on four different occasions during his recent press conference. "We really can't practice to our standard because they're all tired."
Smart and Georgia have an elite offseason conditioning program as evidenced annually at the NFL combine. However, with so many young players, many talented members of Georgia's roster aren't quite ready to meet the Georgia standard yet.
It is not all doom and gloom from Smart. "I am optimistic. We do have good kids, and they do work hard," added Smart. Georgia signed the No. 2 freshman class in the country and it will take time for those players to adjust.
"They got to get in shape. They're constantly tired at practice," said Smart on his young receivers. "The older players might have 25 reps in a practice. They (the younger receivers) might have 20, but they can't sustain their 20 reps throughout practice. They get really tired, so they're trying."
Smart made his comments before wide receiver Nitro Tuggle's arrest and subsequent suspension.
Georgia returns a pretty experienced receivers and tight ends room, so the Dawgs won't have to rely too much on young pass catchers this season.
