Kip Wede claims title to lead Dakota Riptide at 13-and-over state swim meet
Mar. 14—SIOUX FALLS — Marked by a state championship and 11 new club records, the Dakota Riptide swim club put together a strong showing at the 13-and-over state championship swim meet, which was held Feb. 27 through March 2.
Kip Wede claimed a state title in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2 minutes, 21.69 seconds, in the boys 13-14 year-old age group. Wede also finished fifth in the 50 freestyle (25.14) and 100 individual medley (1:00.75) at the championship meet.
Alexandra Stange kicked off the meet by setting a club record with a sixth-place finish in the girls 15-16 1,650-yard freestyle (19:43.20). Stange also finished fifth in the 200 butterfly (2:33.53), fifth in the 1,000 freestyle (11:53.51) and seventh in the 400 IM (5:17.99).
Pierce Baumberger established a pair of club records with a third-place finish in the boys 17-19 1,650 freestyle (17:39.42) and a fifth-place finish in the 1,000 freestyle (10:20.57). He also added fourth place in the 500 freestyle (5:04.40), fifth in the 200 backstroke (2:06.78) and seventh in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:24.96) and 400 IM (4:30.65) on the weekend.
Three more Riptide swimmers set club records in individual races at the state meet — Abby Warmbrand, Cora Hofer and Ben Anderson.
Warmbrand set Riptide club records in 100-yard Individual Medley (third place, 1:01.94), 200-yard IM (fourth, 2:14.78), and 200-yard breaststroke (third, 2:29.07) in the girls 17-19 age group. She also touched the wall second in the 100-yard butterfly (59.06), third in the 200 butterfly (2:19.58) and fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.44).
Hofer set a club record with a sixth-place finish in the girls 15-16 500 freestyle (5:33.86). She also earned second place in the 50 freestyle (24.89), third in the 100 freestyle (55.22), fifth in the 100 IM (1:04.39), fifth in the 200 freestyle (2:01.51) and eighth in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.57).
Anderson set a club record and finished third in the boys 15-16 100 backstroke. Anderson also placed fourth in the 200 freestyle (1:56.23), fifth in the 200 backstroke (2:11.55), fifth in the 1,000 freestyle (11:09.22) and sixth in the 500 freestyle (5:22.04).
The relay team of Warmbrand, James Schelske, Bella Russell and Hofer set a club record in the girls 15-19 800-yard freestyle relay, taking fifth place in 8:26.42. The same quartet also broke the club record in the 200-yard freestyle relay, also finishing fifth in 1:44.56. Additionally, the relay team of Warmbrand, Russell, Hofer and Addy Moody broke the girls 15-19 400-yard freestyle relay record as part of a seventh-place showing in 3:50.61.
On the boys side, the team of Wede, Baumberger, Anderson and Carver Denning set a new club record in the 15-19 year-old 400-yard medley relay.
As a team, the Riptide finished in fifth place, just three points behind Aberdeen. Sioux Falls won the meet, while Watertown and Rapid City finished second and third, respectively. Riptide will have six swimmers competing at Speedo Sectionals in Rochester, Minnesota, from March 14-16. Speedo Sectionals is the first level of USA Swimming's national level meets.
