Kasson-Mantorville graduate Patrick Kennedy places fourth at NCAA Wrestling Championships
Mar. 22—PHILADELPHIA — Kasson-Mantorville graduate and University of Iowa wrestler Patrick Kennedy is an All-American.
Through a black right eye that seemed partially shut, the four-time MSHSL state champion placed fourth at 174 pounds at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships on Saturday.
Kennedy defeated South Dakota State University's Cade DeVos by a 4-1 sudden victory in Saturday's consolation semifinal to punch his ticket to the third place match. That's where the No. 11 seeded Kennedy fell to No. 2 seeded Levi Haines of Penn State by an 11-3 major decision.
The fourth place finish is the first podium in three trips at the NCAA's for Kennedy.
"The last couple years, it really sucks leaving here empty handed," Kennedy told reporters afterwards. "Especially without being the guy at the top of the podium. It felt good that what I have been doing has paid off to a degree."
Kennedy won his first match of the tournament, defeating University of Pennsylvania's Nick Incontrera by a 4-2 decision. He then pulled off the upset of No. 6 seeded Brevin Cassella of Binghamton University 3-0 to reach the quarterfinals. Kennedy nearly pulled off an other upset of No. 3 seed Oklahoma State University's Dean Hamiti, but fell by an 8-6 decision.
Kennedy would respond with a win in the blood round to claim his first All-American honor, defeating No. 15 seed Luca Augustine of Pittsburgh, 7-6. He then defeated the No. 7 seed Navy's Danny Wask by a 7-3 decision.
Kennedy finishes the season with an 18-7 record, with a fifth-place finish at the Big Ten Championships to go with his fourth-place finish at the NCAA's. He did it by wrestling up a weight class this year.
Kennedy's former K-M teammate, Bennett Berge won his first round match of the tournament but lost his next two. The South Dakota State University redshirt sophomore was an All-American last year, but was battling through a knee injury that appeared to hamper him greatly this year.
Berge's college teammate and former Hawkeye Zach Glazier — an Albert Lea grad and the brother of former K-M standout Cole Glazier — went 1-2 at the tournament as well to cap his collegiate career. He finishes as a two-time NCAA qualifier.
