Justin Thomas threatens course record Friday at Players Championship, settles for 62
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Justin Thomas threatened to break the course record at TPC Sawgrass on Friday at the 2025 Players Championship but bogeyed the last to settle for matching the mark with a 10-under 62, a 16-stroke improvement over the previous day.
The 2021 Players champ rebounded from shooting 6-over 78 on Thursday to post 10-under 62 on Friday, and tie Tom Hoge’s course record.
Thomas drained a 19-foot birdie putt at the island-green 17th, the longest putt he made all day, and lifted his putter in celebration as it just tumbled in. That was his 11th birdie of the day.

“You can’t make it more center-cut than that,” said Kevin Kisner, commentating on Golf Channel.
But at the 18th hole, Thomas drove into the right rough and overcooked his punch shot under the trees, which ran into the water guarding the left side of the hole. He took a penalty shot and got up and down for bogey.
Thomas was cruising along at 2 under through his first seven holes in the first round before hitting his tee shot into the water at 17 and making double and rinsing another tee shot at 18, which resulted in a triple bogey. He dug a big hole simply to make the cut but battled back in style.
Thomas made birdies at the last two holes of his first round and picked up where he left off on Friday morning. He birdied his first two holes and circled five birdies on his card on the front nine, including flicking a wedge at No. 9 to 15 inches. He strung together four birdies in a row starting at No. 11, where he two-putted from 43 feet. At 12, he rolled in a 14-foot birdie and tacked on a 19-foot birdie at 13. He finished off the streak with a 3-foot birdie at 14. Thomas added birdie at 16 to cap off a round in which he birdied all four par 5s.
TPC Sawgrass isn’t the only place where Thomas holds a course record. He shot 59 at Waialae Country Club in the first round of the 2017 Sony Open in Hawaii, and has 25 rounds of 63 or lower, including at the 2017 U.S. Open at Erin Hills. Thomas also played alongside Tom Hoge, who shot 10-under 62 at TPC Sawgrass in the third round of the 2023 Players.
