Grizzlies rookie Jaylen Wells will likely miss the rest of the 2024-25 season after suffering wrist and facial injuries against the Hornets on Tuesday, the Grizzlies announced Friday afternoon.
Wells suffered a right wrist fracture, a concussion and a facial laceration, the Grizzlies said. He is expected to make a full recovery.
The injury happened in the second quarter of the Grizzlies' game against the Hornets. Wells, who was going up to the basket, took a hard fall after he was undercut by Hornets guard KJ Simpson. Wells was down for an extended period of time while he was attended to by medical personnel.
Simpson was assessed a flagrant-2 foul and ejected.
Wells was eventually taken to a local hospital and was discharged on Wednesday. He rejoined his teammates for shootaround on Thursday ahead of the game against the Timberwolves.
The Grizzlies listed him as out for Thursday's game with a wrist fracture and a facial laceration.
Wells had played in all 79 games to start the season and had become a critical part of the Grizzlies' success this season. He started the last 74 games and has routinely drawn the toughest defensive assignment, impressing with his unique style of on-ball defense.
