Jake Schmaltz signs with Providence Bruins
Mar. 25—GRAND FORKS — UND senior forward Jake Schmaltz has signed his first professional contract.
Schmaltz inked a one-year deal with the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League that will start in the 2025-26 season. Schmaltz will play the rest of this season on a tryout deal.
Providence is the top minor-league affiliate of the NHL's Boston Bruins.
Boston selected Schmaltz in the seventh round of the 2019 NHL Draft.
Schmaltz, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound forward from McFarland, Wis., scored six goals and tallied 16 points in 38 games as a senior.
For his career, he tallied 20 goals and 63 points in 147 games.
Schmaltz helped UND win Penrose Cups as a freshman and a junior.
Schmaltz
continued a family legacy at UND.
His father, Marc, and two uncles, Mike and Monte, played football for UND. His cousins, Jordan and Nick, played hockey.
Schmaltz is the second player from the 2024-25 UND team to sign a pro contract.
Senior forward Jackson Kunz signed with the AHL's Abbotsford Canucks on Monday.
