Jack Grealish has to respond after missing out on selection for England
Yesterday saw England manager Thomas Tuchel name his first England squad. There were eyebrows raised with some of the selections Tuchel made. One player who missed on selection in Tuchel’s England squad was Jack Grealish. The Manchester City winger has been on the periphery of Pep Guardiola’s squad recently. This has seen him miss out on selection for England. If Grealish wants to get his spot back for England he simply has to play and play well. That starts at Manchester City. So the challenge is there once again for Jack Grealish to respond. Now we wait to see if he does.
Thomas Tuchel explains why Grealish missed out on selection for England.
In quotes relayed by the Independent, Thomas Tuchel explained that there is a role for Jack Grealish in the England set up. But Tuchel explained that Grealish needs to be playing regularly to get back to his best. Speaking on Grealish’s omission from the England squad Tuchel said: “I love Jack. As a headline, I love Jack. I love everything about him. I love his personality, I love his quality. The guy has courage, he can take the heat, he’s not afraid of the Bernabeu whistles when he’s on the ball, it does not affect him and if it affects him only in the best way.”
“So, is he a player that should be available and can have an impact in our squad? Yes, 100 per cent. But lately, he simply has no rhythm and he himself – and I agree 100 per cent with this – said ‘listen, Thomas, I’m not a start-stop player – it is so hard for me to influence a match from the bench and then be on the bench again, and then two weeks later I start again.”
“I’m not judging anyone, not at all, but it’s just a characteristic of Jack. He gets better with every minute. The more he plays, the better he gets and then he becomes a proper machine.”
Jack Grealish has to raise his level of play to be a regular starter for Manchester City. That will open up his pathway to play for England.
The discussion around Jack Grealish has been a constant this season. There is no doubt that this season has been a disappointing one for the England international. He has been unable to get a run at it this campaign. Injuries and fitness issues have plagued the winger. Due to this Grealish hasn’t had a consistent run in the Manchester City lineup. But as much as you feel that Grealish must rise to the challenge to play regularly for Pep Guardiola’s side you do wonder how many chances Grealish will get as Manchester City continue their rebuild in the summer.
Recently, we have seen Jeremy Doku, Savinho, and Omar Marmoush preferred on the left wing to Jack Grealish. Those three players are a different type of player to the England international. Doku and Savinho are more dynamic on the ball, and their pace is a key attribute to their and Manchester City’s play. Omar Marmoush looks like his best role for Pep Guardiola’s side is playing out wide on the left and drifting centrally. Marmoush is also a lethal finisher which is an attribute City so desperately needs. Grealish offers Manchester City more control when he starts out wide on the left. But with where the game appears to be headed is there a role for Grealish in Manchester City’s future? That remains to be seen.
The challenge for Grealish is to show that there is a role for him in Pep Guardiola’s squad. If he can do that, he will play his way back into the England set-up. But that’s the challenge Grealish must overcome. Based on how this season has unfolded you do wonder if he can or if he is capable of doing just that.
