It's official, Texas fires men's basketball coach Rodney Terry after three seasons
Rodney Terry’s tenure as head coach of the Texas Longhorns has come to an end. The university parted ways with Terry on Sunday, a source confirmed to ESPN. The decision for the second-year head coach follows the team’s early exit from the NCAA Tournament.
Terry, who was officially named the 26th head coach in Texas men’s basketball history on March 27, 2023—his 55th birthday—leaves the program after two seasons at the helm. He guided the Longhorns to a 43-21 (.672) overall record, including a 4-2 mark in NCAA Tournament play.
Despite flashes of promise, including an SEC Tournament quarterfinal appearance this year, Texas failed to advance past the First Four in the 2024 NCAA Tournament. The Longhorns fell to Xavier, 86-80, in Dayton, Ohio, ending their season and Terry’s stint as head coach. Under Terry, the Longhorns struggled to establish a consistent offensive rhythm and were criticized for failing to maximize the talents of freshman phenom Tre Johnson.
Terry previously served as head coach at Fresno State and UTEP, compiling a career record of 206-177 (.538) across 12 seasons. His coaching résumé includes nearly three decades of experience, with a prior stint as a Texas assistant from 2002-11 before returning to the Forty Acres as associate head coach in 2021. He was elevated to interim head coach in December 2022 and eventually given the permanent role following a deep run to the Elite Eight in the 2023 NCAA Tournament.
During his three-year stretch with the program—two as head coach and one as associate—Terry helped Texas post a 72-34 (.679) record and a 5-3 mark in NCAA Tournament games. The Longhorns reached at least the Round of 32 in each of the past three seasons, joining an elite group of programs that includes Kansas, Gonzaga, Houston and Michigan State.
Texas begins its search for a new head coach as it looks to reestablish a clear identity and build on recent postseason success. Early reports indicate that Texas may target Xavier Head Coach, Sean Miller.
