The Texas Longhorns women's basketball team will face a familiar foe as UT kicks off the Final Four in Tampa, Florida. South Carolina and the Lady Longhorns have met three times already this season. The Gamecocks hold a 2-1 edge. But none of those game matter now. The winner gets a trip to the NCAA Women's Tournament Finals. The loser's season is over.
The Gamecocks blew out the Horns in the first meeting in Columbia, SC, 67-50. But the Lady Longhorns got revenge in Austin at Moody Center, 66-62. South Carolina took the rubber match in the SEC Tournament final, 64-45.
It is troubling for Texas that the two losses were blow outs and the one win was tight. The crowd shouldn't be a factor, but Tampa is much closer to Columbia than Austin.
Look for a tight game early. Texas head coach Vic Schaefer says UT needs to avoid the bad stretches that plagued his team in the two losses.
"We've had to call [those stretches] 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show,'" Schaefer said. "I told [the team] the other night, what do you want to watch? The first quarter of the SEC tournament, where I thought we were in good shape? Or do you want to watch the second quarter?
"And they're like, 'OK ... we'll watch the second quarter.' You've got to learn from that. The film don't lie."
