How many deer did North Dakota hunters take during the 2024 gun hunting season?

More than 42,000 hunters in North Dakota took about 23,000 deer during the 2024 gun hunting season, according to a post-season survey by the state Game and Fish Department.

The overall success rate for hunters who participated was 55%, with the average hunter spending between four and five days in the field. That's the same success rate as 2023, when nearly 46,000 hunters took about 25,000 deer.

  • Hunters had a 49% success rate for antlered white-tailed deer and a 44% success rate for antlerless white-tailed deer.

What was the success rate by type of license?

  • The state issued 11,920 gratis licenses – a free license issued to landowners – and 9,484 hunters harvested 4,199 deer for a success rate of 44%.
  • The state issued 956 muzzleloader licenses, and 790 hunters harvested 232 white-tailed deer – 116 antlered and 116 antlerless – for a success rate of 29%.
  • The state issued 27,102 archery licenses, including 23,993 to residents and 3,109 to nonresidents. The hunters harvested 5,794 deer – 4,884 white-tailed deer and 910 mule deer – for a success rate of 26%.
