Highlights from new Colts' QB Daniel Jones' free agency press conference
New Indianapolis Colts' quarterback Daniel Jones met with the media on Thursday after signing as a free agent.
Here are the highlights and what you need to know from the interview:
- Jones says of the last week he was trying to see where the best fit was and where he would be excited to go and thought that was the Colts. "I've been really impressed with everyone here."
- Jones says he's always had a lot of respect for Shane Steichen and his offenses as one of the reasons why he felt Indianapolis was a good fit. "There's a lot of really good things here."
- Jones on competing with Anthony Richardson: "It's an opportunity to come in and compete," Jones said. "I'm looking forward to that. I've had a lot of fun. A lot of respect for Anthony and watching him. He's certainly a talented young player and I think the competition aspect of it brings out the best in everybody. I think we're both interested in helping this team win games and whatever we can do to help that happen."
- Jones says not being on the field in Minnesota was tough but it was a valuable experience for him and seeing the process from a different perspective. "Everybody who puts on shoulder pads wants to be out there on the field and playing. So that's always the goal."
- "I just signed and at this point I gotta learn the system and catch up," added Jones. "Catch up to where this team is. Coach Steichen has been here a while. This system has been in place, a lot of these guys know it, and have played in it, so I've got to catch up and do my part to get there. So that's where I'm focused right now. Like I said, I'm looking forward to being here, being with the guys, and getting going."
- Jones says he was impressed with how Sam Darnold prepared throughout the week and focused on the task right in front of him.
- "I've learned a lot," said Jones of his NFL career. "I feel fortunate to have had the experience there, but I'm excited for what's ahead."
- Jones says it takes consistent effort and time to learn a new offensive system. He adds it's all about how much time you're willing to put into it, then it's about getting the on-field reps. Jones says he's had to learn a few other systems during his career.
- "I'm still very confident in my ability to play at a high level," said Jones.
- Jones says he's always looking back at how he's performed in the past to find things he can improve upon.
