Apr. 5—The official transfer portal is unavailable to the masses. That database of nearly 2,000 players can only be accessed by coaching staffs. But is a solid source of who's gone in and who's coming out, and I like to browse on occasion. Check if I missed any interesting player movement. Because you never know what you might find. Like ...
A former Illini
It's not just Amani Hansberry and Sencire Harris back in the portal after the coaching change at West Virginia. Former Illinois walk-on Connor Serven is portaling again. How Serven still has eligibility is something I can't answer after he spend three years at Illinois, one at Eastern Michigan and this past season at Virginia Tech.
The one-time UI backcourt of the future
Back in the portal for a third time are former Illinois commits AJ Storr and Reggie Bass. For a brief moment in time, they were set to be teammates in Champaign. Now both are looking for their fourth college basketball team in four years. Storr, of course, went from St. John's to Wisconsin to Kansas. Bass has moved just as much, going from Central Michigan to Kent State to Lindenwood.
A former area star
Tuscola's Jalen Quinn is in the portal after spending three seasons at Loyola Chicago. The two-time N-G All-Area Player of the Year averaged career highs in scoring (7.1 ppg) and assists (2.3 apg) this past season for the Ramblers.
Several one-time Illini targets
It's a lengthy list given Brad Underwood's propensity to cast a wide recruiting net in the past. Familiar names included: Kanon Catchings (BYU), Asa Thomas (Clemson), Marvel Allen (Dayton), Nojus Indrusaitis (Iowa State), Bryce Heard (North Carolina State), Kam Craft (Miami Ohio), Dai Dai Ames (Virginia), A.J. Casey (Saint Louis) and Brandon Weston (Tennessee State).
Players with famous sports relatives
Cal coach Mark Madsen collected basketball legacies in 2024-25. While Andrej Stojakovic (son of Peja) was the star and isn't leaving, the Golden Bears did lose Stephon Marbury II (son of Stephon) and Hugh Vandeweghe (nephew of Kiki) to the portal. There's also Shaqir O'Neal (son of Shaq) leaving Florida A&M for Sacramento State and Buffalo's Anquan Boldin Jr. (son of Anquan) leaving upstate New York.
And something that caused a double take
Cal State-Bakersfield isn't just losing senior guard Marvin McGhee III to the portal. The Roadrunners are also losing sophomore guard ... Marvin McGhee IV.
