Georgia basketball roster projections after March Madness defeat
The good news about the Georgia Bulldogs' 2024-2025 college basketball season is that UGA made it back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2015. The bad news is that Georgia drew Gonzaga in March Madness and fell behind 27-3 before eventually losing 89-68.
Changes happens fast in college basketball. The NCAA transfer portal opens on March 24 and closes on April 22. Over the past two years, head coach Mike White and Georgia had had 10 transfers leave via the portal. During the same time frame, Georgia has added 10 transfers. So, fans should expect for UGA to add and lose about five transfers this offseason.
We do know that Georgia is bringing in the No. 19 recruiting class in the country. UGA has signed a trio of recruits in three-star center Jackson McVey, four-star center Kareem Stagg and four-star forward Jacob Wilkins.
We examine every Georgia Bulldog that averaged over five minutes per game in 2024-2025. Most players transfer for two reasons: name, image and likeness and/or playing time. Below we sorted players that are able to return by their respective playing time to give fans an idea of who is more likely to transfer.
Who is moving on?
- Senior guard Tyrin Lawrence (out of eligibility)
- Senior guard Dakota Leffew (out of eligibility)
Likely gone
Freshman forward Asa Newell is projected to be a lottery pick in the 2025 NBA draft, so we'd be surprised if he returns to school for another season. Newell could return for his sophomore season, but most lottery picks don't stay in school.
Newell led Georgia in scoring (15.4 points per game) and rebounding (6.9 rebounds per game). He scored 20 points in UGA's March Madness defeat to Gonzaga.
Who can return?
- Sophomore guard Silas Demary Jr. (13.5 points, 3.1 assists and 31.5 minutes per game)
- Freshman forward Asa Newell (15.4 points, 6.9 rebounds and 29.0 minutes per game)
- Sophomore guard Blue Cain (9.6 points, 4.2 rebounds and 27.0 minutes per game)
- Junior forward RJ Godfrey (6.4 points, 3.8 rebounds and 19.5 minutes per game)
- Sophomore guard De'Shayne Montgomery (6.5 points, 2.1 rebounds and 15.7 minutes per game)
- Freshman center Somto Cyril (4.6 points, 3.8 rebounds and 14.1 minutes per game)
- Sophomore forward Dylan James (3.2 points, 2.2 rebounds and 13.6 minutes per game)
- Junior forward Justin Abson (2.2 points, 2.1 rebounds and 9.6 minutes per game)
- Freshman guard Savo Drezgic (2.9 points, 1.1 rebounds and 6.8 minutes per game)
