Georgia baseball ranked among nation's best after opening SEC series win
The Georgia Bulldogs baseball team is ranked No. 5 in the March 17 USA TODAY Sports baseball coaches poll. Georgia (20-2, 2-1 SEC) is off to a historic start to the season.
Georgia won its SEC opening series two games to one over the Kentucky Wildcats, who also received votes in the coaches poll. Georgia used a 17-10 effort to clinch the series over the Wildcats. The Dawgs' offense is among the nation's best again this season.
"Anytime you win a series in general in this league, you got to be happy about it," said UGA baseball manager Wes Johnson. "I mean, it's extremely, extremely hard. There's a reason it's the best league in the country. I mean, Kentucky, you've got to tip your hat. I think they have a really good baseball team, they can do some things."
The SEC has eight of the top 12 teams in the coaches poll. Overall, the SEC has 11 teams in the poll, which is the most of any conference.
"You take any series win you can get," added Johnson after beating Kentucky. Georgia did allow 26 runs against Kentucky, which is not good for the UGA pitching staff. The Dawgs managed to win the series against Kentucky because their offense, which had 46 home runs (second in the nation) entering the Kentucky series, scored a 36 runs.
Next up for Georgia is a trip to face the Florida Gators. Georgia's opening game against Florida is at 6:30 p.m. ET on Friday, March 21.
