Former Michigan football head coach Jim Harbaugh reacts to Matt Weiss indictment charges

There was a bit of mystery in Jan. 2023 when former Michigan football co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Matt Weiss was suspended and then fired from the program. Local police and federal agents had raided Weiss' home after he had committed alleged 'computer access crimes,' which didn't exactly extrapolate what it was that Weiss had done.

Then, on March 20, 2025, Weiss was indicted and it was revealed what the Department of Justice was charging him for -- he had illegally accessed hundreds of thousands of medical records of student-athletes, having 'downloaded personal, intimate digital photographs and videos that were never intended to be shared beyond intimate partners.'

At NFL owners meetings, Weiss' former employer, former Michigan football head coach Jim Harbaugh (now with the Los Angeles Chargers) commented on what he knew and when he had come to know it.

“It was after the TCU game that we — that I found out, we found out, that there was allegations,” the Los Angeles Chargers head coach told the Detroit Free Press' Dave Birkett on Monday in Palm Beach, Florida, at the NFL's annual spring meeting. “And you said it, I mean indictment, that's not a word that — sympathy for the victims and for Matt's family. It’s shocking.”

Much of Weiss' activities predated his tenure in Ann Arbor as he started the identity theft and illegal access during his time with Harbaugh's brother, John, as a coach with the Baltimore Ravens.

Weiss has since been arraigned, where he pleaded not guilty to all charges. Each of the 24 charges levied against him in the indictment comes with a five-year prison sentence. Despite some claims from some rival fans, there is nothing in the indictment that connects Weiss to the Connor Stalions sign-stealing saga or anything that has to do with any competitive advantage for the football program while he was in Ann Arbor.
