Football: Montgomery officially promotes Sean Carty to head coach
The first family of Somerset County football has a new branch on its coaching tree.
Montgomery High School officially introduced Sean Carty as its new head coach Wednesday, as the Somerville alum and former Rutgers receiver takes over for Zoran Milich, who stepped down in January after starting the program a quarter century ago.
Sean Carty, who has served, primarily as Montgomery’s offensive coordinator the past seven years, is the younger brother of Hillsborough state-championship winning head coach Kevin Carty Jr., who spent six years as the head coach at Bound Brook before guiding the Raiders for the past 14 seasons. Sean Carty was the defensive coordinator for the Raiders for seven years before heading to Montgomery.
He is also the older brother of University of Delaware head football coach Ryan Carty, and all three played for their father, longtime state-championship winning coach Kevin Carty Sr., at Somerville. The elder Carty also coached in the college ranks, including six years as an assistant at Rutgers.
Sean Carty said he was perfectly content serving as an assistant coach to Milich, teaching at the school, and having his kids grow up in the community, and he did not have aspirations to lead a program.
“I appreciated my role with Coach Milich. He was so influential to getting me here to Montgomery and supporting me through everything, from my athletics career to my teaching career to my coaching career,” Carty said. “I was very comfortable as an assistant, so I wasn’t looking for a head coaching job anywhere else. I’m glad Coach Milich got to coach for as long as he wanted to coach and I’m glad to be getting the opportunity to keep this going.”
"Sean Carty is the perfect choice to lead the Montgomery High School football program,” Milich said. “He is totally prepared for this opportunity after putting in many years mastering all three phases of the game — as an offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator, and special teams coach. On top of that, he’s deeply committed to building the future of the program, having just launched the tackle youth football program this past season and consistently running a variety of youth football initiatives. His passion, leadership, and dedication to developing young athletes is unmatched. I have no doubt he will elevate the program to new heights while continuing to build a culture of excellence, integrity, and heart. Montgomery football is in great hands. This is a homerun hire!"
Carty was a teacher at Montgomery HS before moving his family into town and he has taken a hands-on interest in the football health of the community, resurrecting the youth football program that had been dormant for several years. Carty said the program played a successful inaugural season last year, and with 40 kids in the program, they’re doing some 7-on-7 in the spring, and he’s really excited for year 2.
“My boys are in it. I have three sons – eighth, sixth and fourth grade – and I wanted them to be playing football in Montgomery with their friends and with the Montgomery community,” Carty said. “So, I reached out, made some calls and tried to see how we could get it going. Got some support in the community and some help getting it started, so we ended up making it go. We took a chance, buying some equipment and hoping we got some numbers, and we did.
“It’s fun working with these young guys and giving them the chance to get better at football and learn the game and communicate together and make those connections when they’re young. You try and build a little bit of trust for when they get a little older.”
Now, Carty takes over the football program on a fulltime basis, after serving as interim head coach several times over the past few years when Milich missed games for medical reasons. And while every coach puts their own stamp on a team, Carty doesn’t expect a lot to change for the Cougars.
“I’ve been very involved in what we’ve been doing here at Montgomery for seven years, so there isn’t going to be wholesale changes taking place,” Carty said. “Coach Milich has established a great culture and community of football here at Montgomery and we’re looking to build on it. I’m, obviously, looking to put a little flavor of my own in it, but we’re on the right track right now as it is.”
“When you think Montgomery football, you think Zoran Milich,” said athletics director Kris Grundy, who has taught and coached at the school for nearly two decades. “He started the program and I think everybody thought he would be here forever, but nothing lasts forever and he felt it was time for him to step aside. But we’re really, really excited about Sean Carty.
