Football fans are being given the chance to unfurl their club's giant flag when Peterborough United take on Birmingham City at Wembley Stadium.

Posh will make the 80-mile (128km) trip to the capital on Sunday, 13 April, to take on League One champions-elect Birmingham in the EFL Trophy final.

The Cambridgeshire club is looking for 12 fans - who have already secured tickets in level one of Wembley for the match - to hold the massive 29m x 12m (95ft x 39ft) blue flag - known as a crowd surfer - aloft.

"This is a great opportunity for Posh fans to become part of history unveiling our flag at the national stadium on our return to Wembley," said Clive Edwards, from the club.

Thousands of Peterborough United fans have already booked their trip to Wembley to watch their side fight for silverware again.

Supporters hoped they could cheer on Darren Ferguson's side to victory for a second year running after Posh beat Wycombe Wanderers at the venue last year.

The crowd surfer flag is used at all home games where the GH Display Stand (the club's sponsor) is open to home fans.

It is unveiled as the teams enter the pitch before the match starts.

The flag is so large that when unfurled, it floats majestically above the heads of about 1,000 fans when the stand is full.

Appealing on its website for volunteers "to assist with the unveiling of our crowd surfer at Wembley Stadium for the Vertu Trophy Final on Sunday 13th April", the club wrote: "Anyone volunteering will receive a match programme from the final signed by members of the squad and will receive this in the week after the final.

"To be eligible to apply, you must have a ticket in Level 1 of the stadium already secured."

Mr Edwards, from the club, added: "This is a great opportunity for Posh fans to become part of history unveiling our flag at the national stadium on our return to Wembley.

"We are sure to be inundated with applications, and they will be chosen at random at the end of the week in preparation for the big day.

"Our supporters have been fantastic, as always, this season, and this is a great way for them to be even more involved in the final."
