LAFAYETTE - Faith Christian 2022 graduate Maddie Schoenradt heisted her way into history at Anderson University on April 1.
Schoenradt stole four bases in game two of a doubleheader at home to help Anderson beat St. Mary's 4-0.
The former Eagles outfielder now has 70 career stolen bases and is the NCAA Division III stolen bases leader, averaging 1.5 stolen bases per game.
"The first thing I did when I broke the record was I looked straight back at my dugout," Schoenradt said. "They motivate me to keep going and my accomplishment couldn't have happened without them. I wanted to celebrate them."
When asked how she became such an elite base stealer, Schoenradt credited her father Mick. Mick Schoenradt was a former track coach at Logansport and worked with his daughter on quickening her steps while attending Franklin Elementary.
"Whenever I was younger I wasn’t a really fast runner but my legs grew very fast and I ran like a baby giraffe," Schoenradt said. "Whenever I was younger I’d race at recess. He taught me how to get fast, gave me some little pointers, and little by little, I tried to be the best I could in playground races."
Schoenradt is a career .311 at Anderson and carries pop in her bat as well. She has smacked four home runs, two triples, and 10 doubles during her career.
At Faith Christian, Schoenradt batted .505 and belted 13 career home runs, five triples, and 13 doubles with 48 RBIs.
Faith Christian coach Rocky Argo bore witness to Schoenradt's dominance when she slammed three home runs in a single game against Lafayette Jeff on April 12, 2022.
Schoenradt's third homer was a walkoff to beat the Bronchos 10-8.
“Maddie was always a competitor," Argo said. "You don’t get that with every sport. We didn’t have a lot of players to choose from as far as girls that play at the club level. She filled those holes, allowed us to be a good team, and realized what she could do by being a good teammate and what she could instruct. That was part of her job."
There wasn't a single player Schoenradt studied to become a base stealer and doesn't carry a collection of items from her record. She simply views base stealing as part of her job to help the team win.
