ESPN GM mock draft contains egregious oversight with 49ers selection
There are no right answers in a mock draft, but the path to a projected choice has to at least make sense.
That's not what happened in a mock draft from ESPN's Mike Tannenbaum, a former NFL general manager who approached his mock as though he is the GM of each team. With that in mind, he should be fired as the hypothetical GM of the 49ers.
Tannenbaum connects the 49ers with University of Michigan cornerback Will Johnson. That in itself isn't a bad idea. San Francisco does need another starting CB and Johnson is a quality prospect who posted nine interceptions and 13 pass breakups across three seasons with the Wolverines.
The justification for the pick, on the other hand, doesn't quite make sense.
Tannenbaum, the hypothetical 49ers GM, completely whiffed on the 49ers' top two needs in this year's draft: defensive tackle and defensive end.
Via ESPN:
A lot of holes here -- the offensive tackle, receiver and cornerback groups could all use a look. But the Niners allowed 25.6 points per game last season (29th), and they didn't really replace the lost talent on that side of the ball in free agency.
He's correct in that the 49ers "didn't really replace the lost talent on (defense) in free agency." Where he errs is that the 49ers lost starting defensive end Leonard Floyd, and two starting defensive tackles Maliek Collins and Javon Hargrave.
The 49ers have a handful of cornerbacks on the roster who could conceivably start. Their defensive line group is in much worse shape and not including them as a position group that needs help is an egregious oversight by a person trying on 49ers GM John Lynch's shoes. His selection of Johnson has been duly noted, and he has been hypothetically relieved of duties from his hypothetical new gig.
