With first-year head coach Liam Coen, the Jacksonville Jaguars are able to get a jump start on voluntary offseason programs, which for them began last Tuesday.
With the players back in the building and a new coaching staff under Liam Coen leading the way, there is a newfound energy circulating that quarterback Trevor Lawrence can feel.
“It feels great, just the energy in the building,” Lawrence said via Pro Football Talk. “I’ve been here a lot just because of rehab and trying to get my shoulder healthy, so I’ve been around this offseason a lot more than maybe even typically. Just to have all the guys back in the building, bring some energy, some juice, I know from a players’ standpoint, everybody’s excited, everybody in the locker room is pumped to be back. And the coaching side, you can feel the energy and excitement."
Naturally, just about any time there is a coaching change after a four-win season, there is going to be added or new energy in the offseason because of the optimism for what's ahead following these changes.
But in the Jaguars' case, contributing to that pulsating energy in the building is the youth on Coen's coaching staff. Oftentimes, with that element in the fold comes plenty of hunger as well.
There is also the energy that new ideas can bring, particularly in Coen's offense, which is derived from the Sean McVay system, one that is ever-evolving and always adapting. That flexibility and malleability will be two key components on the defensive side of the ball as well under Anthony Campanile, whose coaching background has had him operating in several wide-ranging schemes.
"Those guys (the coaches) are up here working all offseason trying to get everything ready," Lawrence added. "So they’re champing at the bit by the time we get in because they get to actually do what they love and coach and have the players around. I think there’s a good balance of everybody’s excited, optimistic and a lot of energy.”
During this portion of voluntary offseason programs, the Jaguars aren't able to be on the practice field yet. So what Coen wants to accomplish right now is establishing the fundamentals and technique of the schemes, along with emphasizing play style and what the team culture is going to be.
