Eddie Howe, the Newcastle United manager, will miss Sunday’s visit of Manchester United after going to hospital for tests.

The 47-year-old missed Friday’s pre-match press conference because of illness, with assistant Jason Tindall standing in for media duties.

Howe was admitted to hospital on Friday night and has been told he will be kept in for further assessment until Sunday.

Despite Tindall insisting that Howe would be “fine for the weekend”, the club issued a statement on Saturday afternoon to confirm that the manager will not be in the dugout for Sunday’s Premier League fixture. Tindall will deputise alongside first-team coach Graham Jones.

A club statement read: “Eddie Howe will miss Newcastle United’s Premier League game against Manchester United on Sunday due to illness.

“The Magpies’ head coach was admitted to hospital late on Friday evening having felt unwell for a number of days.

“Medical staff kept Eddie in hospital overnight for further tests, which are ongoing. He is conscious and talking with his family, and is continuing to receive expert medical care.

“Everyone at Newcastle United extends their best wishes to Eddie for a speedy recovery, and further updates will follow in due course.”

It is understood that Howe has not been able to take training sessions throughout the week after struggling with illness.

Newcastle can return to the top four with a victory over 13th-placed Manchester United, having seen Manchester City leapfrog them courtesy of their 5-2 victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday.

With two games in hand on the outgoing English champions, Howe’s side have set their sights on Champions League qualification this season having already secured the Carabao Cup thanks to their victory over Liverpool at Wembley last month.

Newcastle will kick-off their encounter against Ruben Amorim’s side in seventh place in the table, having also fallen behind Aston Villa – who beat Southampton on Saturday – and Chelsea. Should Enzo Maresca’s side fail to win against Ipswich Town in their 2pm Sunday kick-off, then Newcastle can leapfrog them into fourth place with victory in the day’s later match.
