Eddie Howe: Carabao Cup win can be turning point for Newcastle United
Eddie Howe believes winning the Carabao Cup can be a “turning point” in the history of Newcastle United.
Dan Burn and Alexander Isak scored either side of the interval to give the Magpies a deserved two-goal lead, before Federico Chiesa pulled one back in stoppage time.
But the Tyneside outfit held on to claim their first major trophy in 55 years and their first domestic cup in 70 years. A “very emotional” Howe says the win can help the club “break new ground”.
“It is very unlike me,” he admitted. “We knew what was at stake and just wanted to do everyone proud.
“We were desperate to try and win the trophy after so many years of hurt.
“It had a different feel,” he added, referring to the final they lost to Manchester United two years ago. “We have won the game and everything will be reviewed positively but we prepared well and I was very confident the players would perform.”
He continued: “We wanted to do the football club proud today. We are trying to break new ground and hopefully this is a turning point for us.”
Howe admitted that Burn’s thunderous header for the opening goal took him by surprise. “With set plays, we have worked consistently on certain ones for two weeks for this game,” he said.
“Dan will be the first to admit, he hasn’t practiced like that! All of the players were magnificent but particularly him. He was a colossus.”
When the two sides met just a few weeks ago in the Premier League, Liverpool came away 2-0 winners, but Howe says they tailored their game plan to not give anything away for the final.
“We didn’t want to show our hand when we played them a few weeks ago, we still wanted to win that game we just did it in a different way,” he said.
