Cricketer opens up about mental health struggles
A cricketer has revealed he missed part of last season to deal with difficulties with his mental health.
Northamptonshire all-rounder Rob Keogh said his "troubles off the pitch" were masked under the guise of a back injury.
Keogh revealed his struggles to BBC Radio Northampton ahead of the side's opening County Championship match on 4 April.
"People close to me know that anyway now, and I'm not too afraid to bring that up," he said.
The 33-year-old was awarded a testimonial year in 2024, having made his debut at the club in 2010.
He took on a Courtney Lawes XI at the County Ground in July, with those involved including players and personnel from Northampton Saints and Northampton Town FC.
'Tough year'
Keogh, who has scored more than 6,000 first-class runs for Northants, said the past year helped to restore his confidence.
"I had my own struggles, some of which were covered up with back problems - but they weren't," he admitted.
"I had some time away from the game with some mental health issues and troubles off the pitch that we tried to cover up."
The one-club man revealed the combined pressure of his testimonial, getting married and "not enjoying cricket" made for a "tough year".
However, Keogh said he was "really honoured and grateful" for the efforts people made for him, adding: "I really enjoyed it.
"It certainly helped me and my confidence for life after cricket, meeting new people and dealing with the corporate world.
"All I've known is cricket for 16, 17 years."
