Condors lose close one, get swept by Abbotsford
The Bakersfield Condors scored the game’s first goal in the opening period, but host Abbotsford’s Aatu Raty scored in the second period and assisted on the game-winning tally in the third as the Canucks edged the Condors, 2-1, on Wednesday night.
The win gave Abbotsford, which plays in British Columbia, Canada, a two-game series sweep of Bakersfield.
Alex Swetlikoff scored his fifth goal of the season for Bakersfield at 7:30 of the first period. Noah Philp and Connor Carrick got the assists. It was a big goal as the Condors spent much of the opening period on the penalty kill with Abbotsford getting three power-play opportunities.
Raty’s 15th goal of the season came 5:57 into the second period to tie it. Danila Klimovich scored the deciding goal at 11:42 of the third period. Sammy Blais assisted on both Canucks goals.
According to the Condors’ recount of the game, there was a missed high stick call on Condors forward Drake Caggiula, which drew blood, and directly led to the game-winning goal from Klimovich.
Condors goaltender Collin Delia stopped 31 of 33 shots. Bakersfield, meanwhile, had 42 shots, but could only get one past Canucks goalie Ty Young.
This loss was a missed opportunity for the Condors’ playoff standing as a win would have resulted in two points and allowed them to pull even with the Tucson Roadrunners for seventh place in the Pacific Division and the last playoff spot. Bakersfield, still in eighth place, is 24-22-9 with 57 points, two back of Tucson, which lost 4-2 to Ontario on Wednesday.
Bakersfield returns to action at 7 p.m. Friday, hosting Coachella Valley in the Dignity Health Arena.
