Community meets school district's new athletic director
The Jacksonville Independent School District held a meet and greet for its new athletic director Wednesday.
Montey Stevenson was announced as the new athletic director/head football coach at the February meeting of the school board.
School officials, community leaders, parents and students attended the meet and greet, hosted at the Historic Tomato Bowl. Superintendent Brad Stewart, when introducing Stevenson, noted that he had options and Stevenson chose JISD as much as Jacksonville chose him.
“He had several places he could have gone,” Stewart said. “We are very excited about him being here, being a part of our community and what we’re doing with our school district and specifically what we’re doing with our athletic department.”

Montey Stevenson introduced himself and took questions from those gathered Wednesday.
Stevenson began his address to those gathered in the stands by demonstrating his greeting to athletes and their reply.
“Good afternoon, men,” he said.
"Good afternoon, coach. You can count on us,” the students responded in unison.
Stevenson said it was about accountability and being able to count on one another.
“I’m about protecting, changing and saving every kid that I can,” he said.
He said that protecting included providing an environment where students can be their authentic selves. The change he referred to was growth in maturity from freshman through senior year.
Stevenson said the type of saving he meant was to encourage students to remain in sports, saying those that quit sports don’t usually replace them with things that are positive. He also indicated a focus on academics.
“We’re not going to give them any excuses why they can’t pass classes,” he said.
Stevenson answered a few questions before moving to the field to shake hands and speak with parents individually.
Stevenson also announced the student athletes’ entry into the Tomato Bowl would be different going forward, but didn’t specify how as it is to be a surprise.
