Commanders' GM Adam Peters continues to improve Washington's roster
What is Commanders GM Adam Peters attempting to do this 2025 offseason?
It would be accurate to say, "Peters is working hard to raise the floor of the Commanders' roster."
You've read and heard it ad nauseam, but the truth remains: After four years of Ron Rivera as the general manager and head coach in charge of player personnel, the Washington roster had plummeted to one of the weaker rosters in the NFL.
In 2024, Peters signed and drafted 30 new players to the Commanders' roster. When he first let some of Rivera's free agents hit the market, many Washington fans scolded Peters, but over the course of the season, Peters was proven correct on the vast majority of those personnel decisions.
Now, in 2025, he is addressing areas of the roster in an attempt to strengthen the weaker links. Peters is not omniscient; not every move will be successful. A few of the moves are already being questioned, and it will take time to see if Peters is again correct.
It was a really good Commanders offense for most of 2024. But when they had their lulls during the season, the running game was a weakness. Peters has attempted to strengthen his offensive line by bringing in Laremy Tunsil.
Even more, the run defense was a weakness throughout the 2024 season. So, Peters has signed Javon Kinlaw, Eddie Goldman, and Deatrich Wise. Losing Dante Fowler's pass-rushing ability, Peters has also brought in Jacob Martin, and rumors persist that Peters is after another pass-rushing veteran or rookie in the draft.
Your backup quarterback is always vitally important, and Peters has brought back veteran Marcus Mariota to tutor and encourage Jayden Daniels in the meeting rooms and on the sideline.
The interior of the offensive line may be better if LT Brandon Coleman is moved to LG or RG. Tunsil will anchor down the left side, and Andrew Wylie's contract has been restructured. Wylie could remain at right tackle or be moved to RG for the injured Sam Cosmi (ACL). They could also use Wylie to take over for departed Cornelius Lucas as the swing tackle. Either way, one can easily conclude that Peters has strengthened the floor of the offensive line.
Deebo Samuel? He will not be the 2021 "Deebo," but again, he strengthens the wide receiver group, as does the re-signing of Noah Brown. Remember, Luke McCaffrey will be playing only his fourth season as a receiver. So, look for him to produce much more next season.
Re-signing both Jeremy McNichols and Chris Rodriguez is telling. Could Brian Robinson's place on the 53-man roster be in jeopardy?
Benjamin St-Juste was repeatedly beaten in pass coverage. Peters has signed Jonathan Jones to replace St-Juste and re-signed Noah Igbinoghene. Michael Davis will not return, and Emmanuel Forbes was released during the 2024 season. So, look for another corner to be signed and one to be drafted.
The question for me is, does Kinlaw successfully improve this defensive line by replacing Jonathan Allen? Kinlaw looks great in his uniform. But how much of an imposing force has he been thus far in his NFL career? It's a three-year deal for Kinlaw, so the Commanders hope he has his best years in Washington.
But Peters has added some size with Eddie Goldman. He has not been stellar, but perhaps Peters is planning on Goldman's size helping in a rotation of defensive tackles to improve the Commanders run defense.
Give Peters the next two weeks as well, and then we are off to the draft, where Peters may trade down once or twice to obtain one or two more selections to raise the floor of the Washington roster further.
