Apr. 7—It was a rough start for the Lyle-Pacelli softball team as the Athletics lost their starting catcher to an early injury before losing to Faribault Bethlehem Academy 15-0 in two innings in Todd Park Monday.
The game, which was played in the mid 30s with strong winds blowing in, was called after FBA (2-0 overall) had scored three times to go up 15-0 with no outs in the top of the second inning. FBA finished with four extra base hits and LP had five errors.
"We just wanted to put safety first. It was a tough situation today," LP head coach Faith King said. "We believed they could finish the game and we're not going to hold anything against them. We'll just move on to the next one."
LP (0-2 overall) has a young team that is still trying to get on the same page, while FBA is a perennial power in Section 1A.
"We're young and we're dealing with some people being ineligible, and some people being injured. And we're starting the season against a really good team," King said. "There's a lot of good happening, but this was literally the first time we've been at Todd Park this year. We've been inside for every practice, and a lot of things were stacked against us today."
It is still early in the season and LP will have a chance to improve as it is able to start playing and practicing outside on a regular basis.
"I've seen a lot of progress this season, but a lot of them are still in their first or second year," King said. "Our junior high team won their first game against Houston, so there's a lot of promise coming up."
