SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Padres are 5-0 for the first time in franchise history after beating the Cleveland Guardians 7-2 on Monday night.
The Padres scored four runs in the second inning to take the lead for good and added three in the fifth to extend their lead to 7-2.
San Diego designated hitter Gavin Sheets knocked in runs in each inning and scored in both frames, too. He finished the night 3-for-3 with four RBIs and the two runs.
Manny Machado also had a three-hit game for the Padres, while Fernando Tatis Jr. had two hits and Jason Heyward drove in two runs.
Jose Ramirez opened the scoring, hitting a solo home run for Cleveland (2-2) in the top of the first.
Ramirez returned to the lineup Monday after missing Sunday's win over the Royals with an injured wrist. Ramirez went 3-for-4 to lead Cleveland's offense.
Austin Hedges, in his first start of the season, added a solo home run in the third for the Guardians against his former team.
