Chickasha Disc Golf improving course, Shannon Springs Park with trees
Chickasha Disc Golf is working to improve the disc golf course at Shannon Springs Park.
The course was installed in the early 2000s as an Eagle Scout project with nine baskets. Since then, the Chickasha Disc Golf has added nine new capture baskets, 12 trash cans, four benches and two small foot bridges. Tee pads for players to throw from have also been added to a few baskets.
The club has planted nearly 70 trees in the park and around the disc golf course over the past four years said CJ Brunner, president of Chickasha Disc Golf. Brunner said the club planted 24 trees last week and hopes to plant five more this weekend to make it an even 70 trees planted.
“We had a motive to create obstacles, but we also had a motive to make the park not just a big open field, but to have some trees in there for the squirrels to dwell in, and hawks to hunt the squirrels in, and ducks to poop under,” Brunner said. “So that was kind of a secondary motive, but our primary focus obviously is going to be enhancing the disc golf experience.”
The club has been working in coordination with the City of Chickasha’s Parks and Recreation Department to plant the trees and install other improvements. Brunner said the club reached out to the department before installing or planting anything to gain approval.
Brunner said disc golf picked up popularity during COVID as as it was way for people to be active and outside while still maintaining distance from other people.
The nine new baskets were added in October and Brunner said there has been an uptick in people using the course.
“Since we put the baskets in, anyone who is a typical player at Shannon Springs Park has noticed that there is an increased volume of players and also there are players that we’ve never seen before,” Brunner said. So they’re coming from all over.”
Brunner said many disc golf players use an app called UDisc, which outlines nearby courses and lists amenities. Users can also rate courses out of five stars. The Shannon Springs location currently has a 3.6 rating.
We’re wanting to create, at minimum, a four or better stars experience for those who play (at Shannon Springs Park),” Brunner said.
