LEXINGTON — Move over Shohei Ohtani, there is another two-way star on the rise.
Lexington senior Makaree Chapman put up a performance that mirrored the Los Angeles Dodgers star and even Babe Ruth.
On Tuesday night in a 9-2 win over West Holmes, Chapman clubbed three home runs, collected five RBIs on three hits and dominated in the pitching circle allowing just two runs, one earned, on five hits with 13 strikeouts in seven innings of work.
With Lady Lex leading 1-0 in the top of the third, Chapman came up with a runner on and one out and blasted a home run over the centerfield fence to give her team a 3-0 cushion. Then, leading off the top of the fifth, Chapman put a solo shot over the right-field fence making it 4-2 Lex and igniting a rally that ended with a 7-2 lead at the end of the inning. She came up again in the top of the sixth with a runner on and put an exclamation point on her big day with a two-run shot to center field for her third homer of the day.
Chapman is just the 136th player in Ohio high school softball history to hit three home runs in a single game, according to the Ohio High School Athletic Association Softball Record Book.
It was Chapman's second multi-home run game of the season and second in a row after she clubbed two homers on Saturday at Galion in an 8-3 win, both were solo shots.
Through her team's first six games, Chapman is hitting .556 going 10-for-18 with five singles and five home runs. She has nine RBIs on the year and has scored nine runs while drawing four walks. She hasn't struck out a single time and her slugging percentage is an insane 1.389. Her on-base-plus-slugging is 2.025.
In the circle, Chapman is 5-1 with a 1.55 earned run average. She has 58 strikeouts, 19 looking, in 31 ⅔ innings of work and has allowed just 16 hits, eight runs and seven earned runs with 17 walks.
Lady Lex is 5-1 to start the season and a lot of the credit has to go to Chapman's stellar two-way play.
