Carlton Davis' honest thoughts on teaming with Patriots All-Pro CB
New England Patriots cornerback Carlton Davis III talked about teaming up with Christian Gonzalez, as the duo figures to be a significant part of the Patriots' secondary.
Davis was one of the many acquisitions made by the Patriots during the first wave of free agency last week. He's a stout defender with a strong reputation for causing fits for some of the best wide receivers in the league.
Last season, he recorded 56 tackles, 11 pass deflections and two interceptions with the Detroit Lions. One can only imagine the damage he could potentially do when teaming up with Gonzalez in New England.
“I'm excited, man. He's a young great player," Davis said at his introductory press conference, as transcribed by Patriots.com. "I've watched him film, even when he was coming out of college. I watched his film. I always kind of do a little background check on the corners coming into the league. I guess it's a competitive thing. I liked his film. He's long. He's rangy. Got good skills. He had a really good year last year in my opinion.
"...I'm always eager to match up or just kind of team up with guys who have similar skill sets as me and can help push me in practice and I can push him in practice, and it's always iron sharpens iron, so I'm excited for that. I'm excited to get to practice with him, get to know him a little bit, pick his brain, just see how we can help each other grow.”
Gonzalez undoubtedly had a good season last year, earning his first All-Pro selection and establishing himself as one of the best corners in the NFL.
Now, he'll head into Year 3 working alongside another top-tier corner to shut down opposing offenses in the defensive backfield.
