Fabio Capello has claimed that there a gap between AC Milan and Inter that has opened up in the past couple of seasons, but admitted that in a derby things can defy logic.
With Inter beating Udinese yesterday and Milan losing away against Napoli, there is now a 20-point gap in the table between the two Milanese clubs. The Nerazzurri are pushing for their 21st league title, while the Rossoneri are languishing down in ninth place.
And yet, Inter have zero wins in three matches against their city rivals this season and in two – including the one in Riyadh that gave Milan their first trophy of the season, the Supercoppa Italiana – Simone Inzaghi tasted defeat.
Speaking in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Capello previewed the upcoming Coppa Italia semi-final, which will give Inter two more chances to finally get one over on their neighbours amid a chaotic season.
Are you expecting a surprise?
“On paper it’s hard to believe, after watching Inter’s first half against Udinese and Milan’s first half in Naples. Well, if the two teams were to repeat the 45 minutes seen yesterday I struggle to believe there will be a match.
“But let’s get back to the usual discussion, derbies are games in themselves. And even in the last three precedents the Rossoneri showed up at particular moments and were largely underdogs.”
