Buzz Williams will face Marquette next season after getting hired as Maryland's head coach

There will be a little extra juice in Fiserv Forum next season when the Marquette men's basketball team plays host to Maryland.

That's because former MU coach Buzz Williams will be leading the Terrapins after agreeing on Tuesday to replace Kevin Willard as Maryland's coach.

Buzz Williams replaced Tom Crean at Marquette

After spending a season as an assistant coach under Tom Crean, Williams was elevated to head coach for the Golden Eagles when Crean left for Indiana. From 2008-14, Williams went 139-69 and made the NCAA tournament five times in six seasons while reaching two Sweet 16s and an Elite 8.

Williams' tenure at MU included several off-the-court issues, and he jumped to Virginia Tech while questioning the feasibility of a reconstituted Big East conference.

Williams spent five seasons with Virginia Tech before bouncing to Texas A&M in 2019.

Buzz Williams will face Shaka Smart at Fiserv Forum

MU and Maryland agreed to a home-and-home series last May.

The Golden Eagles won in College Station on Nov. 15. Willard then led the Terrapins to the Sweet 16, but took the job at Villanova with Maryland searching for an athletic director.

The date for next season's game at Fiserv Forum hasn't been announced yet.

Williams has never faced MU since leaving the school, but Golden Eagles head coach Shaka Smart faced Williams at Texas A&M several times when Smart was at Texas.
