Browns and Jack Conklin agree to re-work contract
Offensive tackle Jack Conklin and the Cleveland Browns have revised his contract.
This is not the same as a contract restructure that we have seen quarterback Deshaun Watson and many others do throughout their time in Cleveland. A reworked contract is essentially the two sides ripping up the old contract for a completely new one. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler was the first to report this happening between Conklin and the Browns today.
This was a possibility discussed when talking about how the trade for quarterback Kenny Pickett impacted the salary cap and how the Browns could clear more space. Conklin entered the new league year with a base salary of $14 million but none of that money was guaranteed to him. This made him an obvious cut candidate given the amount of money the Browns could save to move on from the oft-injured Conklin.
Looking at the revised contract between Jack Conklin, Browns
However, given the way the offensive tackle market has been booming in NFL free agency, with the likes of average offensive tackles like Dan Moore getting $20 million per year, the Browns have opted for compromise with the All-Pro. Instead of a base salary of $14 million, Conklin has agreed to drop that number down to $10 million. To make this a win-win deal, the Browns are guaranteeing all but $1 million of that revised contract to Conklin.
The Browns and Conklin, who was originally under contract through the 2026 season, agreed to strike the final deal as well. This means that the aging veteran will be able to test the free agent market one more time in his career. The Browns now save $4 million on the cap this year and will not have Conklin on the books next year.
