Bronny James' 39-Point Outburst Draws Strong Message from Nick Wright
After a strong outing in extended minutes for the Los Angeles Lakers during their recent loss to the Milwaukee Bucks, Bronny James found his way back with the South Bay Lakers in the G League. On Monday night, James dropped a career high 39 points for South Bay, leading to a strong message from Nick Wright.
The Lakers decision to select Bronny with the 55th overall pick in the 2024 NBA draft was controversial, as many fans believed he was only drafted because his father, LeBron James, wanted to play alongside him in the NBA. Bronny has continued to put in the work behind the scenes, and it's beginning to show with his play on the court.
“Just that I belong out there,” James said when asked what he's looking to prove during his rookie campaign. "That’s all I’m trying to prove. A lot of people say I don’t, but I just come out, work every day, try to get better every day and prove myself every day. All the criticism that’s thrown my way, it’s just amazing to shut all that down and keep going.”
While James hasn't gotten much of an opportunity in the NBA just yet, he's proving that he has the upside to turn himself into a contributor for Los Angeles in the future. One guy who fully believes in James now is Nick Wright, as he revealed he's quite impressed with what the rookie has managed to do during his first year in the league.
"He is 100% validating the pick and he is answering every call, and I do think for the most scrutinized second-round pick ever, I think it's really impressive," Wright said on "First Things First."

In 10 games with the South Bay Lakers, James is averaging 22.4 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game while shooting 46% from the field. He hasn't managed to make the same impact in the NBA, though, as he's averaging just 2.3 points, 0.6 rebounds, and 0.6 assists per game on 32.7% shooting with the Los Angeles Lakers.
L.A. will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday night when they square off against the Indiana Pacers at 7:30 p.m. ET.
