Bracketology for USC women's basketball before Selection Sunday
After playing three games in three days at the Big Ten Tournament last week, USC women's basketball gets some much-needed time off this week. The Trojans will have had nearly two full weeks of rest by the time they play their next game in the first round of the NCAA Tournament next weekend.
Where will the Trojans be seeded in the tournament? With Selection Sunday rapidly approaching, ESPN recently updated its bracketology for the women's tournament. Let's take a look at where they have USC slated.
One seed
Despite falling to UCLA in the Big Ten Tournament championship game, ESPN still has the Trojans slated as a No. 1 seed. The Bruins are also a No. 1 seed, along with Texas and top overall seed South Carolina.
Home sweet home
After having to travel all the way to Indianapolis for the Big Ten Tournament, the Trojans are hoping to stay much closer to home in the NCAA Tournament. USC would host the first two rounds at Galen Center, and then travel to Spokane for the second weekend. Hence, they would not have to leave the West Coast until a potential trip to Tampa for the Final Four.
Early round matchups
ESPN has USC facing No. 16 seed Hawaii in the first round. Should the Trojans advance, they would take on the winner of No. 8 seed Cal and No. 9 seed Mississippi State.
Potential regional opponents
USC's most likely Sweet 16 opponents would be No. 4 seed Ole Miss—whom the Trojans defeated in their season opener in Paris back in November—and No. 5 seed Kansas State. The other top seeds in USC's region—and potential Elite Eight opponents—are No. 2 seed NC State and No. 3 seed Oklahoma.
This is the really important part of USC's bracket. The Trojans would love to avoid UConn and Notre Dame as potential No. 2 seeds in their region. If USC did get NC State as the No. 2 seed in its region, the Trojans would be pleased, on balance. The right bracket -- a favorable matchup with a possible No. 2 seed -- is as important as being a No. 1 seed.
Fourth matchup at the Final Four?
ESPN has UCLA as the other No. 1 seed on USC's side of the bracket. Hence, should the two LA schools both win their respective regions, they would square off for the fourth time this season at the Final Four.
