Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen receives maiden senior Spain call-up
Bournemouth centre-back Dean Huijsen has been called up by Spain for the first time for the upcoming Nations League quarter-final tie against the Netherlands, confirmed by La Roja.
The 19-year-old has been included in the squad as a replacement for Barcelona’s Inigo Martinez, who suffered a knee injury in the 4-2 win against Atletico Madrid.
There were high expectations that Huijsen would get his maiden senior call-up following his breakout season with the Cherries.
Huijsen joined Bournemouth from Juventus last summer for around €18 million and has since hit the ground running.
He has developed into one of the best young defenders in the Premier League, making 23 appearances this season.
Huijsen has been instrumental in Bournemouth’s impressive form and their quest for the Champions League qualification, forming a solid defensive partnership with Illia Zabarnyi.
The former Juventus star’s meteoric rise has also turned the heads of top European clubs, who are battling to sign him this summer.
Huijsen has represented the Dutch national team at various youth levels and the Spanish U21 side.
Spain will also be without Barcelona midfielder Marc Casado, who suffered a knee ligament injury against Atletico last night. He could be sidelined for at least two months.
Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Aleix Garcia has been named as Casado’s replacement.
Real Madrid centre-back Raul Asencio has also received his maiden call-up from Spain for the games against the Netherlands.
The 22-year-old has quickly become a prominent fixture in Madrid’s defence this season, producing stellar performances against Manchester City and Atletico in the Champions League.
