Bengals' overlooked name could explain approach to DE so far

The Cincinnati Bengals took it easy when it comes to edge rushers ahead of the NFL draft, seemingly signaling that they are happy with where things stand at a position most outsiders accuse of being problematic.

With Trey Hendrickson still on the roster, Myles Murphry shouldering first-round expectations and Joseph Ossai back in the fold, one of the names who has fallen to the side of the conversation is Cam Sample.

Hence, The Athletic's Paul Dehner Jr. pointing out Sample and suggesting that even if the Bengals don't make a move in the draft, the team is happy with where things stand:

"Edge: "The club is invested in Myles Murphy playing more and playing up to his draft pedigree. They brought back Joseph Ossai. Taylor mentions Cam Sample’s name was mentioned multiple times. They look to add at least one more here but feel they have answers if it doesn’t come together."

The Bengals quietly brought Sample back on a one-year deal last month, giving him another chance after a torn Achilles ended his 2024 season before Week 1. The former fourth-round pick continues to be valued for his versatility as part of a rotation.

Still, the Bengals will need to iron out the war of wills with Hendrickson before even thinking about skipping on edge rushers in the draft. Sample coming back off an injury and question marks around Murphy suggest the team still has work to do at this spot.
