Beavers ranked 13th in NSIC Preseason Poll
Mar. 21—BEMIDJI — The Bemidji State women's track and field team has been placed in spot No. 13 for this spring's NSIC Outdoor Preseason Poll. Along with the team ranking, senior thrower Mikenna Pattrin and junior distance runner Maggie McCarthy were named the team's Athletes to Watch.
Last spring, Pattrin grabbed outdoor personal bests in the hammer throw and javelin throw at the NSIC Outdoor Track and Field Championship. She enters this season with personal records of 46.29 meters in hammer throw, 38.97 meters in javelin, 13.03 meters in outdoor shot put and 30.35 meters in the discus throw.
Pattrin made large improvements in her indoor marks this season, grabbing personal bests in shot put and weight throw multiple times. She finished with a personal record of 16.42 meters in the weight throw at the NSIC Indoor Championship and 13.46 meters in shot put at the NDSU Bison Open.
"Mikenna is one competitive athlete," BSU head coach Mike Lynch said. "She has big goals and seems to always rise to the occasion and get things done. She is a great leader to the other athletes on the team. She has been committed to her craft and is always wanting more from herself. She is ready to do big things this outdoor season."
McCarthy grabbed the distance Athlete to Watch nod for Bemidji State after making improvements to her personal bests at almost every cross country and indoor track meet this year. Last year, McCarthy finished the outdoor season with a personal best in the 3,000 steeplechase with a time of 11:47.20 at the outdoor conference championships.
This year, she kicked things off with a 6,000-meter cross country best at the conference championship on Oct. 26. McCarthy then added a personal record in the mile at the UND Indoor Tune Up and closed off the indoor season with a 3,000-meter PR at the NSIC Indoor Championship. Her current bests for outdoor track sit at 2:24.02 in the 800, 5:05.76 in the 1,500 and 11:47.20 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
"Maggie is that athlete that really has come to embrace the journey and trust the process," Lynch said. "As the school record holder in XC and has done some great work on the track as well. She is poised to have a great outdoor season."
Minnesota State was picked to win the NSIC in the preseason women's outdoor track & field coaches' poll. The Mavericks received 12 first-place votes and tallied 167 points, ranking them ahead of second-place Mary. The Marauders had 157 points and a first-place vote (coaches cannot vote for their own team). Augustana was third with 143, while Sioux Falls was fourth with 137 points and the final first place vote. Northern State rounded out the top five with 107 points.
Minnesota State's Adeyah Brewster was picked as the preseason track athlete of the year, while Sioux Falls' Emily Swanson was the preseason field athlete of the year.
The 2025 NSIC outdoor track and field season gets underway this weekend. The regular season will culminate on May 8-10 at the NSIC Championships held on the campus of Minnesota Duluth.
The Beavers begin competition on Mar. 29 at the St. John's Optimistic Meet in Collegeville. BSU has a packed schedule all spring, with 11 meets scheduled between Mar. 29 and the NSIC Championships at the start of May.
