Barcelona determined to avoid repeating Lionel Messi mistake with Lamine Yamal contract renewal
Barcelona are carefully planning the future of Lamine Yamal to avoid a situation similar to what happened with Lionel Messi’s contract over the years.
In fact, reports from AS suggest that the club is determined to handle the young star’s contract renewal differently, ensuring financial stability while securing his long-term commitment.
In 2023, Barcelona extended Yamal’s contract until 2026. However, due to FIFA regulations regarding minors, the club was unable to offer him a deal exceeding three years at that time.
Despite this limitation, there was already a verbal understanding that once Yamal turned 18, he would sign a long-term contract, potentially until 2030.
Older terms are no longer valid
Over the past year, Yamal has rapidly grown into a crucial player for Barcelona, exceeding all expectations.
His exceptional performances have made the initial agreement outdated, prompting the club and the player’s representatives to re-evaluate the terms.
Given his rise to prominence, Barcelona now aim to secure his future while implementing a financial model that prevents excessive contract escalations, something they struggled with in Messi’s case.
Barcelona’s plan for a sustainable contract
Messi, throughout his career at Barcelona, signed multiple contract extensions, reportedly nine in total.
His deals were frequently improved, often every two years, leading to a situation where his salary became unsustainable for the club’s financial structure, which is why Barcelona are determined not to repeat this pattern with Yamal.
The club recognises that the young forward is already one of the best players in the world. As a result, he deserves to be among the highest earners in the squad.
However, Barcelona want to implement a progressive contract structure that ensures stability while rewarding the player appropriately.
By taking a strategic approach, Barcelona hope to secure Yamal’s long-term future without compromising their financial health.
The club understand that his development and value will only increase, making it essential to strike the right balance between rewarding talent and maintaining financial responsibility.
