Arsenal v Chelsea LIVE: Premier League result and reaction as Mikel Merino makes the difference
Arsenal reduced their deficit to Premier League leaders Liverpool to 12 points with a game in hand as they beat Chelsea 1-0 in a scrappy encounter at the Emirates.
Mikel Merino, again playing as a striker, made the difference with a glancing header to convert a Martin Odegaard cross for the game’s only goal.
His 20th-minute strike was to be one of few on target as both sides struggled in front of goal, with both keepers nearly caught out at times and Marc Cucurella - himself lucky to avoid conceding a penalty for handball early in the first half - Chelsea’s biggest threat.
As is often the case it was a feisty London derby so far between two Premier League rivals, but ultimately it was Arsenal in the driving seat, and they extended their unbeaten league run over the Blues - who were missing Cole Palmerdue to injury - to seven games. second in the league and Chelsea just six points off them in fourth.

Arsenal beat Chelsea to close gap to Liverpool to 12 points
15:29 , Flo CliffordMikel Merino made the difference at the Emirates today, with his first-half header capitalising on a brilliant spell of Arsenal pressure - and ending the hosts’ set-piece goal drought.
But it was a nervy display, particularly in a scrappy second half, and won’t do much to alleviate the ‘Arsenal need a striker’ chat.
However, there’s a smile on Arteta’s face and it’s another win in the bag as the Gunners stretch their advantage over Chelsea, in fourth, to nine points.
It’s also a seventh straight league game in which Chelsea have failed to beat Arsenal as an unwanted streak continues.
Mikel Merino downs Chelsea to snap Arsenal’s winless run
15:57 , Flo CliffordArsenal brought their three-game winless run in the Premier League to an end with a 1-0 victory over Chelsea at the Emirates to strengthen their grip on second place.
Mikel Merino’s clever header in the 19th minute settled a London derby that will not live long in the memory, the stand-in number nine looping Martin Odegaard’s corner in at the far post as Mikel Arteta’s side rekindled memories from earlier in the season of their effectiveness and cunning at set-pieces.
Chelsea, playing for the first time in the league without the injured Cole Palmer, were by contrast completely bereft of ideas, the slow, timorous approach that has characterised recent nervy wins lacking the bite to trouble Arsenal who had little problem keeping the ball from them.
Merino makes the difference for the Gunners
15:48 , Flo CliffordFULL-TIME: Arsenal 1-0 Chelsea
15:24 , Flo Clifford94 mins: Timber dramatically falls to the ground as he wins a free-kick, and after what looks like a brief dispute with Maresca on the sideline over that behaviour, shakes the manager’s hand.
Sanchez boots the ball down towards the Arsenal goal and after a bit of pinball in the box Gabriel heads it safely to his keeper.
And that’s that!
Into four minutes of stoppage time
15:20 , Flo Clifford90 mins: In a move which sums up Chelsea’s attack today, Tosin aims a simple pass at Neto but it dribbles past him to be gathered by Raya.
Tierney comes on for Odegaard as we enter four minutes of added time.
CHANCE! Arsenal 1-0 Chelsea
15:17 , Flo Clifford87 mins: Cucurella has another go, getting his head to a looped George cross from the right-hand side of the box, and gets there before his man Timber - but Raya gathers easily.
Maresca makes his final two changes as Gusto and Tosin replace Fofana and Badiashile.
Cucurella gets himself in a decent spot again but can’t find a way past a wall of Gunners. The hosts are camping out in their half now as the final few minutes slip away.
Time ticking away with Arsenal 1-0 up
15:12 , Flo Clifford83 mins: Gabriel puts in a promising run but despite a mass of Arsenal shirts in the opposition box, there’s no-one to receive a cross. Since Merino’s 20th-minute goal there’s been little quality from either side in front of goal - Chelsea haven’t had a shot on target in this half.
James is the next to be subbed off, this time for Lavia, as we enter the final ten minutes of normal time.
Nkunku, Martinelli replaced
15:08 , Flo Clifford78 mins: Subs for both sides, as Dewsbury-Hall and George replace Sancho and Nkunku, who have been effectively neutralised today.
Nwaneri, playing his last game for Arsenal as a 17-year-old, comes on for Martinelli, who is clutching his lower back after a meaty challenge by Cucurella right in front of a furious Arteta. The change looked planned, rather than in response to that challenge.
Arsenal struggling to build on their one-goal lead
15:03 , Flo Clifford73 mins: That foul on Lewis-Skelly wins Arsenal a free kick in a dangerous position just to the left of the 18-yard box. Odegaard and Rice stand poised to take it, and there’s a long build-up as both sides faff over the wall and whether Martinelli is blocking Sanchez’s view.
All that drama, and for naught, as Rice clatters it into the backside of a Chelsea player, before it ricochets out for a corner.
Arsenal are looking a little toothless at the moment. Martinelli nods Rice’s delivery wide of the back post.
Sparks fly at the Emirates
14:59 , Flo Clifford70 mins: Lots of needle in this second half, as Odegaard is the latest to see yellow for stopping a Cucurella counter. That makes six bookings so far (and significantly more dramatic falls to the turf looking for one).
Partey, among the yellows, goes in late on Caicedo but escapes further punishment.
The game feels very finely balanced at the moment. Lewis-Skelly makes a brilliant run into the box and gets brought down by none other than Fofana...
CHANCE! Odegaard misses opportunity to put Gunners 1-0 up
14:53 , Flo Clifford65 mins: Rice clears a Chelsea corner but they keep coming as Neto has another go - and they can’t make the most of this one either.
Meanwhile, the goal replay system indicates that Merino’s latest effort - punched away by Sanchez - was just millimetres away from crossing the goal line. A lucky escape for the visitors.
Rice pulls it back for Odegaard in the box, but his low shot is stopped by Sanchez.
CHANCE! Arsenal 1-0 Chelsea
14:49 , Flo Clifford60 mins: Neto ducks and darts between a couple of Arsenal players but curls his long-range effort wide.
More yellows as first Partey and eventually Fofana go into the book - Fofana for throwing another ball onto the pitch to delay the restart. With a more trigger-happy ref he could have collected multiple yellows by now.
Arsenal break and Merino nearly has a second but volleys straight at Sanchez! It’s a neat stop by the keeper.
Yellow cards fly as derby heats up: Arsenal 1-0 Chelsea
14:46 , Flo Clifford56 mins: Arsenal win another corner but Rice’s delivery is headed away as Neto counter-attacks - but that’s snuffed out quickly by Timber.
Gabriel is the next to go into the book for a late challenge on James, who hits the deck. This game is starting to get a little scrappy.
YELLOW CARD: Arsenal 1-0 Chelsea
14:42 , Flo Clifford52 mins: Fofana, who was lucky to escape a booking for that nasty challenge on Rice in the first half, should see yellow for a pullback on Trossard - but it instead goes to Pedro Neto for backchat to the referee.
Second half: Arsenal 1-0 Chelsea
14:37 , Flo Clifford47 mins: Back underway at the Emirates, with no changes made to either side - something of a surprise for the visitors.
Odegaard stands poised over a first corner of the second half... but it’s easily cleared by Nkunku at the near post.
First-half highlights
14:34 , Flo CliffordHALF-TIME: Arsenal 1-0 Chelsea
14:22 , Flo CliffordHalf-time at the Emirates and Arsenal are deservedly ahead - but only just.
After a brilliant opening spell of pressure the Gunners broke the deadlock courtesy of their speciality, the set-piece goal, with Merino again the hero as he headed home an Odegaard delivery from the corner.
But Chelsea grew into the first half and it’s likely Arteta will be happier than his counterpart Maresca to hear the half-time whistles. Both managers might need a word with their goalkeepers, who have had a bit of a howler so far, with Raya lucky that Cucurella’s attempt rolled wide after he mishandled it.
CHANCE! Arsenal 1-0 Chelsea
14:18 , Flo Clifford45+2 mins: Robert Sanchez’s dismal afternoon is going from bad to worse. He’s lucky to get away with it again, as he palms a Martinelli cross straight into the path of Trossard, who - fortunately for the Chelsea keeper - makes a mess of his first touch and can’t get anything on it before Sanchez is back in position.
Arsenal 1-0 Chelsea
14:17 , Flo Clifford45 mins: Fernandez fires a poor attempt into the stands behind Raya’s goal as a lengthy Chelsea attack comes to naught.
Fofana goes flying after both he and Merino aim to plant a header on the ball. It looks to be some sort of back or rib problem as he’s clutching his right side. No movement from the physios yet.
Three minutes added on at the Emirates.
Arsenal 1-0 Chelsea but Gunners under pressure
14:12 , Flo Clifford41 mins: Chelsea seem emboldened by that Cucurella chance and are enjoying a dangerous spell of possession now. Neto wins a corner off Gabriel, the hosts clear it, but the Blues are still on the attack.
RAYA FUMBLES: Arsenal 1-0 Chelsea
14:09 , Flo Clifford36 mins: Almost a disaster for Raya! Cucurella whacks in a left-footed shot on the edge of the box, the keeper completely fumbles it, and it rolls goalwards - but luckily for him, it drifts just wide of the far post.
Raya may have fallen asleep there, he’s had so little to do so far, but he’ll be wide awake to the danger now.
CHANCE! Arsenal 1-0 Chelsea
14:06 , Flo Clifford34 mins: Badiashile shoves Timber as the players form a wall for an Arsenal free-kick. Chelsea are playing with fire here.
All the action is in the visitors’ half at the moment. Odegaard puts in some fancy footwork outside the box and tees up Martinelli, but the Brazilian fires way over.
YELLOW CARD: Arsenal 1-0 Chelsea
14:01 , Flo Clifford29 mins: So far Chelsea have had one shot, a long-range effort from Fernandez that seemed more speculative than anything else.
Colwill gets the first booking of the game for a reckless challenge on Trossard.
VAR CHECK: Arsenal 1-0 Chelsea
13:5623 mins: VAR are called into play as things go from bad to worse for Chelsea. Fofana stamps on Rice in a nasty attempt to win possession, and the England player isn’t happy about it. No red card for Fofana, but a free-kick for the hosts.
GOAL! Arsenal 1-0 Chelsea
13:51 , Flo Clifford19 mins: It’s Arsenal’s makeshift striker who scores first!
Martinelli wins a corner as Cucurella sends the ball behind, Odegaard crosses to the near post, and it’s a sublime header from Mikel Merino to soar above Sanchez’s outstretched hands.
It’s a fourth goal in seven appearances for a man who until a few weeks ago had always played in midfield.
Arsenal 0-0 Chelsea as Trossard goes wide
13:49 , Flo Clifford18 mins: Arsenal have had eight touches in the opposition box and four shots, compared to nil and nil for Chelsea, at the 15-minute mark.
The medics are on for Enzo Fernandez, who hits the deck after Rice’s left arm knocks him in the face in an aerial challenge. When play restarts Arsenal are quick to break and after another poor attempt at a clearance by Sanchez, Trossard drags a shot wide.
Arsenal 0-0 Chelsea as hosts apply the pressure
13:44 , Flo Clifford13 mins: Total chaos in the Chelsea box! The ball appears to come off Cucurella’s arm at the back line under pressure by Timber, finds its way to Sanchez, who half-heartedly punches it away twice. It pinballs around the box and eventually falls to Rice, who skies it way over the bar.
No penalty, however for what looked to be a handball by Cucurella.
Rice then has a go from range but it drifts wide!
SAVE! Arsenal 0-0 Chelsea
13:41 , Flo Clifford8 mins: Raya scuffs a clearance that lands dangerously near Cucurella - but the Chelsea man knocks over Timber and gives away a cheap free-kick.
After a spell of Chelsea possession Sanchez aims a poor clearance straight at Martinelli, who shoots - and the Blues keeper nearly fumbles the catch! A bad start to the game for Sanchez, who has only just made his way back into the side after a string of errors - five leading to goals and counting this season.
Arsenal 0-0 Chelsea
13:34 , Flo Clifford3 mins: Huge cheer for newly-announced England international Myles Lewis-Skelly as he breaks down the left and wins a corner. Timber gets his head to Rice’s delivery but nods wide.
All Arsenal in the opening stages as Trossard takes a couple of touches in the box - and fires wide.
KICK-OFF: Arsenal vs Chelsea
13:31 , Flo CliffordUnderway at the Emirates in this clash between second and fourth.
Arteta: "It's a massive one"
13:26ArsenalbossMikel Arteta speaking to Sky Sports before the game:
"It's a massive one and we know after we have an international break - we know how important it is to win the game.
"We believe we have the players to win the game. We know the strength of Chelsea and we have the best players to start the match."
Arsenal and Chelsea warm up for early Premier League kick-off
13:21 , Jack RathbornIs the title still within reach for Arsenal?
13:12Arsenal are unbeaten in their last six games against Chelsea and memorably thrashed them 5-0 at the Emirates last season.
Their 15-point gap to runaway league leaders Liverpool may feel unassailable at this stage, but a win today would do their (very slim) title hopes no harm at all.
Incidentally, that 5-0 loss was the last time Chelsea started a Premier League game without Cole Palmer...
Enzo Maresca provides injury update on Cole Palmer
13:01 , Jack Rathborn"He's not in the toilet, for sure! He had, as we know, last week some problems [with illness]. And unfortunately yesterday he had a very small problem.
"He had an injury yesterday during the session. It was a very light session. That's why we think it is nothing important. But we wait and the feeling is he will be back after the next international break."
Palmer is now a major doubt for Thomas Tuchel’s first two England games during the upcoming international break.
Chelsea can close gap to their rivals with victory at the Emirates
13:00 , Flo CliffordChelsea are currently fourth in the Premier League and six points behind their hosts, but would move to just three points behind with victory at the Emirates today.
But it’s a tall order - at least according to the stats.
The Blues have won just three of their previous 19 away matches in the league against sides above them in the table at the time, and haven’t won in their past six league games on the road full stop.
Chelsea players inspect Emirates pitch before kick-off
12:49 , Jack RathbornTeam news
12:35 , Flo CliffordGabriel Martinelli makes his first start since February 5 for the hosts, replacing Ethan Nwaneri, while Raheem Sterling is ineligible to face his parent club so doesn’t make the squad and Mikel Arteta persists with Mikel Merino as a striker. The big news for Chelsea is the absence of out-of-form Cole Palmer, who misses out entirely, as Enzo Maresca makes six changes from the side that beat Copenhagen in the Conference League midweek.
Cole Palmer ruled out for Chelsea in late blow for Arsenal clash

Arteta expecting intense clash with Chelsea
11:47 , Lawrence OstlereA three-match winless run has left second-placed Arsenal 15 points behind Liverpool as the title race slips away from them and the north London side are now looking over their shoulder with Nottingham Forest and Sunday's opponents Chelsea catching up.
Chelsea are fourth, six points behind Arsenal ahead of the London derby at Emirates Stadium, where the west London side lost 5-0 last season, but Arteta said this time they play a much changed squad under Enzo Maresca.
The two sides played out a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge earlier this season.
"It's two teams that want to be very dominant in their way of playing, very aggressive in the high press and the way we have to have the ball," Arteta said.
"There is a lot of individual quality on that pitch, so it's about imposing what you want in the direction you want to take the game and keep them very far from their strengths, that's going to be key."
Arteta bats away talk of Real Madrid
11:31 , Lawrence OstlereArsenal are very excited to play reigning champions Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals next month but they will not be distracted from their Premier League duties as they shift their focus to Chelsea, manager Mikel Arteta said on Friday.
Arsenal thrashed PSV Eindhoven 9-3 on aggregate to earn a quarter-final spot against 15-times winners Real Madrid, a team they have played only once before in the competition, knocking the Spanish side out over two legs in the last 16 en route to the 2006 final.
"Fascinating draw, we play the club with the biggest history in the competition," Arteta told reporters. "Very excited to play against them, but before that we have some big matches in the Premier League."
Chelsea line up deal for Sporting's Geovany Quenda
11:16 , Lawrence OstlereSome transfer news, in case you missed it this week: Chelsea have agreed a deal to sign Sporting Lisbon winger Geovany Quenda.
The 17-year-old, who was reportedly a target for Manchester United, will remain in Portugal throughout the rest of this season and next before moving to London in 2026.
He has made 52 senior appearances for Sporting and made his Champions League debut in September.
Able to play on the right wing and at wing-back, he joins a list of teenagers set to join up with the club in the coming years with deals also having been struck for 17-year-old Brazilian Estevao Willian and 17-year-old Ecuadorian Kendry Paez, with both set to move in July.
Sanchez set to start in goal for Chelsea
11:02 , Lawrence OstlereRobert Sanchez is set to start in goal after winning his place back for the win over Leicester.
He had previously missed four league games in a row following a series of errors but after understudy Filip Jorgensen played against Copenhagen, Maresca said Sanchez is his pick for the Emirates Stadium clash.
"I think Robert needed some days off or at least rest mentally," said Maresca. "He's back and hopefully we are not going to change until the end (of the season)."
Maresca: Chelsea can flex tactics to beat Arsenal
10:45 , Lawrence Ostlere"The intention will be that (to control the ball)," he said. "And if we are able or not depends a lot on the opponent.
"They just told me that Pedro Neto (against Copenhagen) did a sprint on 90 minutes. The reason why is that we were sitting back at the edge of our box. So if we plan the game (against Arsenal) sitting back and wait, sure our strikers and wingers are going to do 20 sprints for 60, 70 minutes.
"When you play most of your game in the opposite side, there is not space to do that kind of sprint.
"Our plan is to control the game but it's a team that is going to press high and try to be aggressive, and probably we will have more space to attack in behind."
Maresca: Chelsea can flex tactics to beat Arsenal
10:31 , Lawrence OstlereChelsea head coach Enzo Maresca said his team are capable of hurting Arsenal on the break if forced to break from their rigid tactics in today’s meeting at the Emirates.
Recent displays have seen a commitment to a slower, positional way of playing, despite the last four games having been against weaker opposition on paper, with the team under instruction from Maresca not to move the ball forward too quickly.
It has led to audible frustration from supporters during 1-0 home wins against Copenhagen in the Conference League and in the Premier League against Leicester, whilst the away leg against the Danish side was also a slow, stolid affair.
Maresca has repeatedly said he will substitute players who do not adhere to his style, even as fans have increasingly voiced their displeasure with the way their team are playing.
Yet ahead of the meeting with second-place Arsenal, he admitted his side could be forced to be flexible.
Arsenal v Chelsea – team news
10:04 , Lawrence OstlereArteta is set to bring back several players who were benched in midweek against PSV. Gabriel Jesus, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka remain out injured.
Reece James and Cole Palmer have shaken off illness and are expected to start the game, while Maresca confirmed in his press conference that Robert Sanchez would start in goal. Chelsea are still set to be without Marc Guiu, Nicolas Jackson, Noni Madueke, Malo Gusto and Mykhailo Mudryk.
How to watch on TV
09:50 , Lawrence OstlereThe match will kick off at 1.30pm GMT at the Emirates Stadium today, Sunday 16 March.
Arsenal v Chelsea will be broadcast live in the UK on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League TV channels. Subscribers can watch the match online via the Sky Sports and Sky Go website and apps.
Chelsea in confident mood after finding winning touch
09:40 , Lawrence OstlereChelsea have their own ambitions as they hunt a place in next season’s Champions League, which will likely require finishing in the top five. Enzo Maresca’s side sat fourth coming into the weekend and are on a run of four successive wins after knocking out Copenhagen in the Europa Conference League in midweek.
Arsenal should be fresh after midweek
09:31 , Lawrence OstlereArsenal can take the opportunity to close the chasm to Liverpool with a victory that would leave them 12 points behind the Premier League leaders, who play Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final later in the day.
Arsenal come into the game after seeing off PSV in the Champions League in midweek via a 2-2 draw and 9-3 aggregate victory, and they should be fresh after Mikel Arteta rested several of his stars.
