Among Jillian Bensman's favorite things: singing, softball, family time
Faces off the Field gives a deep look into the thoughts and lives of high school student-athletes in the Austin area. Today we feature Round Rock pitcher Jillian Bensman, a junior who will continue her softball career when she enrolls at Southwestern University in Georgetown.
All about Jillian: Singing and playing college softball
Tell something about you that most people don't know.
One thing people don’t know about me is that I sing. I made the all-state treble choir two years in a row and I plan to continue in college.
What has been your favorite vacation?
I went to Paris, France, in 2018 with my family. It was super memorable and I enjoyed learning about the history of the country and experiencing the French culture, especially the art.
If you could be any superhero, who would you be?
I’m not a big superhero fan, but if I could have a super power I would choose mind reading.
What do you believe to be the world's greatest invention?
I believe the world’s greatest invention is the airplane because I love to travel and hope to continue traveling.

Getting hyped up with teammates before games is a ritual
Do you have any game-day rituals?
One of my biggest game-day rituals is getting super hyped up either on the bus or in the locker room with my teammates while getting ready. We play really loud music to sing and dance to. It gets the energy up a lot and it’s one of my favorite pre-game activities.
What has been your favorite softball memory at Round Rock?
During my sophomore year, we were in a rebuild after losing seven seniors, and against all predictions we made the playoffs by beating teams nobody thought we could beat.
Has softball taught you any lessons you apply to daily life?
Softball has shaped the person that I am today. It has helped me learn discipline, time management, interpersonal relations, empathy and resilience. I could go on and on.
I hear you have exciting college plans.
Yes, I have verbally committed to play softball at Southwestern University in Georgetown. I have always wanted to play collegiate softball and I am so excited to be a Pirate.
Dream dinner: For Jillian, family comes first
If you could have dinner with any four people in the history of the world, who would they be?
Family has always been the most important thing to me. I would love to have one last dinner with my maternal grandfather who just passed away in November, my paternal grandfather who passed away a year ago, my great-grandmother Nanny who passed away when I was very young and my paternal grandmother who passed away before I was born.
Why did you choose your maternal grandfather?
I chose him because he was one of the closest people to me. He was the person who taught that family is the most important thing and he always took care of us. He inspired my love for music and guitar and his impact on my life shaped me as a person.
You're in charge of the menu. What are you ordering for everyone?
Italian food. My grandfather was born in Italy and he often chose Italian when we went out to dinner.
