It took nearly 20 seasons, but Alex Ovechkin finally broke Wayne Gretzky's NHL goals record on Sunday afternoon.
Yes, in case you were wondering, Ovechkin did score his 895th goal on a rocket shot from the near left circle. And yes, the Washington Capitals and NHL did pull out all the stops in their celebration of Ovechkin's remarkable achievement. It was a storybook moment that deserves as much. We even got a fantastic speech from Gretzky!
Knowing all of this, you'd forgive Ovechkin if he seemed like he kinda just wanted to take one solitary breath after this incredible moment. After all, there's a lot going on, and he's played a lot of hockey over the years, dearest readers. Well, that's more or less what Ovechkin did after he finally got the on-ice microphone to address everyone in attendance over his record mark.
His first words were literally, "What a day," as if everyone on hand hadn't witnessed some of the most outstanding sports history they'll ever take in.
