49ers tried to get Dre Greenlaw to renege agreement with Broncos
During the NFL's "legal tampering" period, teams are allowed to negotiate deals with pending free agents from other clubs. Teams can reach agreements with those pending free agents, but contracts can't be signed before the NFL's new league year opens.
Consequently, there have been cases where a player reaches an agreement with one team before changing his mind and going to another team before making his initial deal official. It happened twice with the Denver Broncos last offseason.
After initially agreeing to a three-year deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2024, kicker Wil Lutz later changed his mind and returned to the Broncos instead. The following week, linebacker Justin Strnad struck a one-year deal with the Carolina Panthers before later opting to instead return to Denver.
Both of those scenarios worked out in the Broncos' favor. This year, the San Francisco 49ers attempted to steal a player away from Denver.
The Broncos agreed to a three-year deal with Dre Greenlaw on the first day of the NFL's negotiating window, two days before contracts could become official. Before the deal was signed, the 49ers attempted to get Greenlaw to change his mind and return to San Francisco.
“The Niners were trying to get back Dre Greenlaw, even after Denver had an agreement done with him,” ESPN's Adam Schefter said during an appearance on Altitude Sports 92.5 FM on Monday. “They were pushing to get that done, and they were trying to flip his decision in this world that we live in, where people commit, and there are agreements.
“The Niners tried to flip Dre Greenlaw back to San Francisco, and I think they were pretty persuasive, but not persuasive enough. And I think Dre Greenlaw stood his ground and kind of stayed with Denver.”
Greenlaw has since officially signed with the Broncos on a three-year, $31.5 million deal. He will start at inside linebacker in 2025, perhaps next to Alex Singleton.
