1 win in 26 – the insane stats that prove Chelsea are now a mid-table club
Chelsea fans watching yesterday’s game could be forgiven for not being optimistic.
This team has put in some good performances this season, but almost none of them have come since Christmas, and almost all of them have been against the weaker teams in the division.
In fact, it’s been a very long time since we were a threat against the top sides. Simon Johnson’s piece for the Athletic notes the incredible stat that the Blues have won just once in 26 games against Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal since the Boehly-Clearlake takeover 3 years ago.
To broaden things out, the Blues have beaten a team above them in the table 3 times in their last 20 away games. Chelsea no longer expect to win no matter who they play, at this point they are expected to lose or draw if they play a decent team.
This has gone beyond the issue of a single team or manager, this shows how the winning mentality and aura has been totally dissolved. The spirit built up over a generation was flushed out as the squad was cleared, there was no passing on of the values from one group to another, just experienced veterans kicked out and replaced by kids with no history or knowledge about being a top player.
“Chelsea looked beaten before the kick off” Johnson wrote, and that’s how most fans felt. We used to feel confident against Fergie Man U, now we feel less confident when we face Bournemouth or Nottingham Forest.
How to recapture winning mindset
The question is how we get that winning habit back. We need really good players and a manager who can perform that alchemy. Is Enzo Maresca ever going to make this group into winning machines? We have our doubts.
