Wisconsin pizzeria apologizes after customers get high from pizzas accidentally contaminated with THC
STOUGHTON, Wis. (WFRV) – A Wisconsin-based pizza restaurant has issued an apology after it was discovered that some of the pizza served to customers was contaminated with THC.
Officials with Public Health Madison and Dane County stated in a news release that Famous Yeti's Pizza in Stoughton had unintentionally served pizza contaminated with THC between Tuesday, Oct. 22, and Thursday, Oct. 24.
EMS workers in Stoughton had reportedly notified the public health department that they had transported multiple people with THC-related symptoms during that time, all of whom reported eating at Famous Yeti’s Pizza.
“If you ate the pizza and are experiencing THC-related symptoms, please contact your health care provider or call 911 if your symptoms worsen," Bonnie Armstrong, the Director of Environmental Health at Public Health Madison and Dane County, was quoted as saying in the release.
Health officials are warning anyone who may have purchased a pizza from Famous Yeti's during that time to throw it away.
Famous Yeti's Pizza addressed the incident Thursday on its Facebook page, providing an explanation and apology.
Yeti’s Community, it is with deep regret that we inform you of a potential contamination involving pizza sold between Tuesday, October 22nd, 4:30 p.m. and Thursday, October 24th, 12:00 p.m. After receiving reports from staff, Yeti’s owner, and employees of unexplained physical reactions, we underwent an investigation with the Stoughton Police and the local health officials. Today it was confirmed that pizza had been sold with dough mistakenly prepared with Delta9 contaminated oil. The oil accidentally used in the product originated from a shared storage space in the on-site cooperative commercial kitchen. We want to assure you that all affected products have been destroyed. Famous Yeti’s is working closely with local authorities to improve our storage and security protocols to prevent this from happening again and to guarantee the safety of our customers. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience or harm caused. If you were affected or have any questions, please reach out to Cale at famousyetis@gmail.com.

As mentioned in the Famous Yeti's statement, the public health department confirmed that Famous Yeti's does indeed operate in a building with a shared industrial kitchen where many businesses make food and other products.
"Public Health sanitarians are currently investigating the building with help from the Stoughton Police Department and the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection. The owner of Famous Yeti’s Pizza is cooperating with the investigation," the Public Health Madison and Dane County's release states.
Delta-9 THC is one of the main cannabinoids responsible for marijuana's psychoactive, intoxicating and/or euphoric effects. Side effects include anxiety, paranoia, dizziness or increased blood pressure, among others, but the Madison and Dane County public health department warned that symptoms may vary based on how much is consumed.
"Keep in mind each person’s reaction may be different, and the concentration of THC in the pizza can vary by piece," the department wrote.
