Which major retailers will be closed for Thanksgiving this year?
(NEXSTAR) — Many major retailers will again be closed for Thanksgiving this year, adding to a trend that began to ramp up during the COVID pandemic.
With the exception of one company, those listed below will reopen for Black Friday — many with early or extended hours.
Some of those Black Friday hours may vary by location. Retailers recommend checking their websites before heading out to confirm each store's hours.
Aldi
As it does for most major holidays, Aldi will close its stores for Thanksgiving.
Ace Hardware
Most — but not all — locations will be closed for Thanksgiving this year, a representative confirmed to Nexstar. Because Ace Hardware locations are independently owned and operated, store hours on Black Friday may vary. You can check your store’s hours online.
Best Buy
The retailer will again be closed for Thanksgiving this year. You can find your Best Buy store’s Black Friday hours online.
Costco
As it usually does for major holidays, Costco will keep its warehouses closed for Thanksgiving. Black Friday hours may vary by location and can be confirmed online.
Dick’s Sporting Goods
While Dick’s Sporting Goods will be closed for Thanksgiving, most stores will open bright and early at 6 a.m. for your Black Friday shopping needs.
Five Below
Five Below stores will close for Thanksgiving and reopen at 7 a.m. on Black Friday, a representative tells Nexstar.
Hobby Lobby
Just as it does with other major holidays, Hobby Lobby will be closed for Thanksgiving. Stores will reopen at 8 a.m. on Black Friday, the retailer confirmed online.
Home Depot
Hope you weren’t planning to do any home projects on Thanksgiving: Home Depot stores will be closed for the holiday. You can check Black Friday hours online.
Home Goods and Homesense
You’ll have to hold off on shopping for home decor and furnishings until Black Friday; both Home Goods and Homesense stores will be closed for Turkey Day, a representative tells Nexstar. Most will reopen at 7 a.m. on Black Friday. You can confirm your store’s hours online.
IKEA
No, you cannot spend your Thanksgiving in a dining room display at IKEA. You can, however, peruse the furniture retailer on Black Friday, but you’ll want to confirm location hours online first.
JCPenney
After being closed for Thanksgiving, JCPenney will open its doors early at 5 a.m. for the “true Black Friday enthusiasts.”
Kohl’s
While Kohl’s stores are closing for Thanksgiving, they will open bright and early at 5 a.m. on Black Friday.
Lowe’s
Lowe’s will close for Thanksgiving “to allow customers and associates time to celebrate with their loved ones.” To confirm your store’s Black Friday hours, check online.
Macy’s
While you’ll be able to tune in to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade before your Turkey Day dinner, you won’t be able to shop at your nearby Macy’s. Stores will reopen with extended hours on Black Friday, starting at 6 a.m. You can confirm your store’s hours online.
Marshalls
Marshalls will remain closed for Thanksgiving. Most stores will reopen at 7 a.m. on Black Friday, a representative tells Nexstar.
PetSmart
You won't be able to run out and get your pet a special Turkey Day toy on Thanksgiving, as PetSmart stores will be closed. They will open at 7 a.m. on Black Friday, a spokesperson tells Nexstar.
REI
Unlike other retailers on this list, REI will be closed for Thanksgiving and Black Friday. The company announced in October it would again pay its 15,000 employees to spend time outside while encouraging its customers “ to choose nature therapy, as opposed to retail therapy.”
Rite Aid
For the first time, Rite Aid stores will be closed for Thanksgiving, a company spokesperson tells Nexstar.
Sam’s Club
Thanksgiving is among the holidays that Sam’s Club locations close for, according to the retailer’s website. Regular hours will resume on Black Friday, with the clubs staying open later for extended holiday shopping.
Target
Again this year, Target stores will close for Thanksgiving. You’ll be able to find your store's Black Friday hours online.
Trader Joe's
As it usually does, Trader Joe's will close its stores for Thanksgiving, a company representative confirmed to Nexstar.
TJ Maxx
A representative confirmed to Nexstar that TJ Maxx stores will be closed for Thanksgiving. Most will reopen at 7 a.m. on Black Friday.
Walgreens
For the second year in a row, Walgreens will close nearly all of its stores for Thanksgiving, the company confirmed in September. Its 24-hour locations will, however, remain open.
Walmart
For a fifth year in a row, Walmart stores will close for Thanksgiving, the company announced in October. Stores are expected to reopen for regular hours on Black Friday but you can confirm your location’s details online.
